5 mo old 35-45 min naps
« on: January 01, 2014, 00:21:39 am »
So we've had ups and downs when it comes to naps. For awhile though she was really good at naps and not very good with nighttime sleep. But for weeks now she has been great with nighttime sleep and her naps have shortened quite a bit. I've been trying to extend her waketime gradually for some time now but it doesn't seem to matter. She will be 5 months in a week, so not quite 5 months but close. I just cant tell if her 35-45 min naps are UT or OT. She always wakes up with a smile and never wakes up crying. Sometimes she will get grumpy fast but it could also be teething, she is also in a wonder week.

Here is our EASY:

W-7:15
E-7:25

S-8:50

W-9:25-9:35

E-10:25

S-1:40-2:10

S- 4-4:40

W-4:35-5:25

E- 6:15
Bedtime routine
S- 6:35-7:25

No DF, usually one NW between 1-4am. Sometimes a second NW occurs around 10:30pm if BT occurs around 6:30.

I know these waketimes are a little on the short side, we've been trying to increase but it hasn't seemed to matter. We usually aim for about 1hr35min after she wakes in the morning. And we've had some success with 1hr20min naps with this WT, but also some short naps. The rest of the day we aim for 1hr45-2hrs and her second nap is always short and sometimes her "catnap" turns into a long two hour nap. When it doesn't, she gets a fourth nap to get us to BT. I'm not sure why her morning naps are short, and her afternoon nap sometimes turns into a long nap.

I know sometimes short naps are just developmental, just wondering if something was wrong with the EASY. I don't usually shorten awake times after short naps because she seems to fight naps more when I shorten awake time. Plus her waketime is already on the short side. Should I be shortening wake times after short naps? I also have never had success extending naps, she is always wide awake when I go to her and so we just get up and get on with our day. I don't even try anymore.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi. I am no expert but have had tonnes of help from others on here. My LO sounds very similar to yours.

As LO is happy then from what people have told me she is likely UT for the first nap. It may be that LO is so tired sometimes that by 3rd nap the long nap happens.

I have also very very rarely had success with extending but the only times it has happened is when LO has woke crying as very tired so maybe a push on A times may help you resettle.

I have been told tht not extending naps means that you are reinforcing 45 min nap so really should try to extend at least one nap. That is what I am trying now.
