Awesome link for new moms- timeline of a breastfed baby!
« on: January 03, 2014, 21:20:52 pm »
I stumbled across this link when pregnant with my second LO, and wished I would have read it with my first!  I had no baby experience (not even a diaper) and came from a family who didn't BF, so I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and what was "normal" when it came to a baby's feeding.  I hope it helps someone else as much as it has helped me.

It's good, isn't it?  Some of the stuff she posts is interesting, some is more inflammatory!!

Fab. I wonder why she says not giving a dummy is preferable though?  She doesn't quote any reference for that so I wonder if it is just her opinion.  The FSID actually recommend a dummy for 6 months as it reduces the risk of SIDS.

Mabe a N.american thing. To reduce the risk of SIDS the rec to use dummy exists but maybe only the last 5 years or so, but with BF I know a lot of bf consultants and the La leche League say not to use especially in early days due to nipple confusion.  Not saying that is how I feel, but I have heard that here in Canada.

Good stuff!  I have heard the link between pacis and reduction of SIDS as well.  Mine never took them though.

Ali, possibly because BF has been proven to lower risk of SIDS considerably to start with over the course of numerous studies (fsid.org.uk/breastfeeding) and that dummy use hasn't been conclusively proven to help, although there have been studies to say that it could possibly reduce risk (fsid.org.uk/dummies), although that wording isn't exactly robust!!

I have no information about when dummies started to be suggested to be used, but could it also be that the article was written before that changed?  It must've been published well over a year ago.

The recs for a dummy by fsid and aap go back to before my ds1 was born 4+yrs ago and when this was published in june 2009.

They don't know the mechanism through which having a dummy at sleep times reduces the incidence of SIDS but many studies (8 quoted in the link above) show significant protection.
It also shows in the link that dummies do not cause BFing problems but vice versa, BFing issues may make it more likely a baby will be offered a dummy. Hence the higher number of babies with dummies who cease to be bf.

No idea, then, although I am aware that the way BF babies suck and FF ones are is different, hence different palate development, which, I believe, is related to incidence of SIDS, so perhaps that's part of it?  Don't know.  Simply guessing, really :P
