Hiya!
We started sippy cup when we started solids (to wash down the food) and we just have plain old water!
She has it with every meal now & uses it herself (10mo)

We started at 5/6 months when we started solids too. Tracy suggested just putting an oz or 2 in the cup or they are too heavy for them to lift. Your LO may need you to tip it gently for them at first so they know there is something in it!
We found the free flow cups the best like the Tommee Tippee first cup (still use them now sometimes) they are cheap and cheerful. The valved cups are very hard to drink from as they need to be able to squeeze and suck - I couldn't work them!

Mine never took to a sippy cup and we went straight to an open cup. I still have to help her hold it but she hardly spills any out when she drinks it... its actually quiet neat to see her drinking out of a cup. I put water and I also give her soup out of a cup and we started around 6 months
