8 month old nap issues
« on: January 14, 2014, 04:45:09 am »
My 8 month old always napped perfectly but now that she can stand on her crib she just pulls herself up and screams. She really has been an angel baby.  We tried everything that used to work, soother, rubbing her back and talking to her, let her cry it out. She won't have any of it.  I did try the pick up/put down method today but it didnt work and that's he one bw thing I don't agree with. Anyone else with this problem

what time are you putting her down for a nap? she may not be tired enough and needs more A time? like any new developmental thing they learn, it will be something they want to practice and if it were me, i would lay her down and walk out, repeat, repeat and repeat and she will learn its nap time. during the day you could try some activity time in the cot, giving her lots of practice and i taught my dd how to sit down from a standing position by encouraging her to go down by guiding her hands down the cot bars.

Also you mentioned you let your dd CIO, the bw condones this method of sleep training as Tracy believed it broke the trust between the parent and child.

pu/pd doesn't work for everyone but you don't have to pick her up every time. i would simply put her down, say your sleepy phase and leav.

let me know how you go

We nap at 9 and 2 usually.  It's the afternoon we have trouble with, today I waited until I saw a few of her tired signs and then wound down with a couple of books and she went right to sleep when I put her down, it was more like 2:45 and she slept for 2 hours.  We will see how bedtime goes now!

Some babies aren't able to do 2 long naps anymore at this age; you may have to look at either shortening her morning nap to 1.5hrs (if she sleeps 2hrs) or even an hour if her nap is 1.5hrs so that she's tired enough in the afternoon OR giving her a little more A time before the afternoon nap and either waking her up from her afternoon nap to protect bedtime or accept a slightly longer day.

I've been pretty much cutting dd's nap to 1hr since 8 months and now at 9 months we're doing 45min morning nap and around 1.5-2hr (sometimes longer) afternoon nap.

This is all leading to the 2-1 nap transition, which some babies start really early.

Glad to hear she had a good pm nap :)

That's a good point! I just didnt believe she could be growing up so fast. We were on the road today, so our day was thrown off. I think I will try shortening her morning nap tomorrow
