7 month old - Early to bed early to rise
« on: January 14, 2014, 20:04:28 pm »
Hi there, I have a 7 1/2 month old DD.  After months of struggle, we finally can say we have a good nighttime sleeper. (Still working to master days).  She sleeps 11-12 hours at night time, usually 11.5hrs. She goes to bed at 6pm and wakes at 5:20am. I have tried putting her to bed at 6:30 which causes a wake up of 4am and lots of tears.  I would love to get a bit of a later bedtime (6:30) and would love it to result in a 6am wake up. We have come to accept the 5:20 start but would like to start later if possible.  Any suggestions on how to do this?  A typical day looks like this:

5:20 - wake up, breastfeed
6:30 - breakfast
7:30 - Nap #1 (1-1.5hrs)
9:00 - breastfeed
10:00 - snack
11:30 - Nap #2 (1.5hrs on a good day, we have had a few 30min naps here though!)
1:00 - breastfeed
2:00 - snack/lunch
3:30 - attempt a 3rd nap but this nap doesn't always happen.  We think we are in the process of dropping this nap.  I won't let her sleep past 4-4:30. If nap doesn't happen, her bedtime is bumped earlier a little.
4:30 - breastfeed
5:00 - Dinner
5:30 - bath, breastfeed, story time, bed
6:00 - Asleep

Wow, actually as I type it out like that I realize we have a much more predictable day schedule than I thought. Just some days are re-arranged due to the odd 30minute nap.

I would like to shift bedtime later by 1/2 hr in hopes of moving wakeup later 1/2hr. I also don't like that when 3rd nap doesn't happen, she is asleep by 5:30. It seems crazy!  And husband doesn't get much time with her as a result.

Suggestions?

Hi there! Welcome to BW! It looks like your LO needs a bump in A time and to work towards dropping that 3rd nap. Most LO's of this age are on 2 naps and are closer to a 3 hour A time. If she is sensitive to OT I would do 15 minutes more A each day for 3 days and then adjust again. Have a look here.

and here maybe...All about the 3-2 transition- 5/6 months

Thank you for the reply. I am new to this site, there is a while thread about this nap transition! Fantastic! Thank you. I will start into that, increasing awake times, and post on there if I hit some speed bumps! My only concern is during the transition making her bedtime earlier means a5-530 bedtime which is so early.

As you push out the naps, the whole day should shift nicely. Keep us posted!

Thanks for the comments. I have re-posted on the Naps thread as I agree this has to be a 3-2 transition. Doing more reading she really shows all the signs. However, we are in a total funk now.  She had a few days where she skipped her 3rd nap because she fought so hard, we moved up her bed time to try to balance it but we wake earlier and earlier every day it seems. This morning was 4:10am and not resettling.  I feel we are going backwards, her tired signs appear around 2hrs now, it used to be no problem to get to 2.5hrs, her naps are shorter, and I feel we're entering a vicious overtired cycle and have no idea how to break it.  We had such a battle getting her out of the habit of short naps and I feel like we're falling back to it, plus the early mornings are killing us.  Really not sure how to handle this now!  Wish I had better news for an update.

Hi there, it looks like you have gotten some great advice on the Naps board. Would you like me to close this thread so you can keep all your advice in one spot? I will chime in if I have any insights..

Hi, Yes that would be fine.  When I first posted this I guess I didn't realize that it was more of a nap issue!  This website is full of information!
