what will your LO eat?
« on: February 01, 2014, 03:40:33 am »
so DD is 27 months old and about as picky as most 2 yr olds. at meal times I try to always put something on the table she will eat. she will almost always eat carrots and cucumbers, which will not keep her full and she will ask for something to eat at bedtime. she of couse eats bread. but I need some variatons or ideas even of what your LO will almost always eat.

Anything, as long as it's in a soup

What a difficult question - LOs are all so different with their tastes! Mine wouldn't touch soup until he was almost 3yo but oddly for a kid he'll eat sprats (head, tail, the lot), mussels, rocket, olives, asparagus, blue cheese.  He will eat almost any vegetable but never cauliflower and only recently broccoli flowers (he likes the stem though).

Maybe you can expand on her bread tastes? Naan, chapati - mine will not touch rice, has never eaten rice so if I make curry I give him naan or chapati or paratha (sp?) type bread which gives him a different experience to wholemeal sliced which he'd have for sandwiches or toast. Tortilla wrap, crumpet, bagel, baguette, rolls...
dumplings in stew are sort of bread like, mine loves them, plus loves stews (not meat so much though) with a range of veg and beans in although he still likes me to separate each thing into a pile rather than eating it all mixed up.
Or experiment with different spreads on bread humus, pate, kidney bean dip, fish paste/pate...

When mine started asking for food at bed time I increased his protein intake by switching breakfast from muesli to omelet. He wouldn't eat omelet any other time of day but ate it in seconds at breakfast!

creations, thanks, I am basically looking for variations of bread. should have been more specific. naan is a great idea.
increasing protein intake is a great idea but basically the only protein she eats is yogurt and cheese. perhaps I will start offering full fat milk with dinner.

I make some flat breads when I'm feeling energetic :)  It's a great thing to make with your LO's if they like kneading dough (and you can vary the flavours by adding different things to a basic recipe)
I also buy flat breads from the bakery, cheese and tom, or garlic or cheese and garlic. sometimes we have them as they are as an accompaniment to a meal, other times I use them as a pizza base and add a load of toppings.

Did she ever eat any other proteins?
Bean burgers/fritters were a fav here when DS didn't eat other proteins. I used to make a batch, cook then freeze them so I could just lift a couple out when needed. I don't really like having different meals for him but at that time I used them as snacks so he could still join in with the regular family meal. I also added milk powder anywhere I could (pancakes, milk, muffins) to boost the protein and calcium.

once she ate some pirk but has refused it since. DD1 was exactly like she is now with food and at 5yrs she eats great.
what is eggy bread? would love the recipe
and would love your recipe for flatbread Creations, please?
I think what is so hard is that even bread, or toast, is refused often and who knows what she will and won't eat. I just want to avoid the hungry at bedtime thing as with her it will become routine to have a bedtime snack.

Eggy bread is so easy, whisk an egg up on a plate and soak bread in it then fry the bread until a bit crispy! Love it :-) x

How about banana bread, I cut out the sugar and use if for savoury things? Otherwise I buy a really dark bread with lost of seeds and tell DD it's cookie bread, she gobbles it up every time.

Banana bread is a fave here too for both my boys (T has a Df/gf/egg free one!)
Luncheon (barf but it has protein lol)
Fruit whole grain bars
Crackers
Homemade potato and sweet potato chips
Yogurt and custard lover here too ::)
Scones?
My 15 mth old loves sausages, fritters and mini muffins

Fwiw Hun Z is the worst eater, he's a toast fiend and even fussy about his toast.

This is a really simply flat bread recipe
http://www.meanmothercooker.com/2012/01/hugh-fearnley-whittingstalls-flatbread.html
(you can add flavours before rolling, smear with olive oil add flavours such as ground almond and sultanas, fold over then roll)
but I notice on a few recipes there's a split of half strong flour and yeast with half plain like this which I haven't tried
http://www.ziplist.com/recipes/433616-Hugh_Fearnley_Whittingstall_s_River_Cottage_garlicky_flatbreads

chapatis are simple too, don't know why I don't make them more often really (too lazy?)
2 cups wholewheat flour
water yoghurt or milk
salt
2 tblsp veg oil

Make well in flour
add water/yoghurt/milk little at a time and knead until smooth
add oil
knead, cover, sit 10 - 15 min
divide to 12 balls, roll smooth
dip in flour, flatten, roll out to 4mm thick
cook in dry pan

We only had a short phase of hungry at bed time. When I increased protein in the day it stopped, but I also used to keep any left over veg or dinner and tell him if he's hungry then there's his dinner back. If there's a chance of getting into the habit of something different/tasty just before bed I think there's more temptation to not eat enough earlier in the day.
I would try protein at breakfast, eggy bread, omelet, or a sausage if she'll have one, it's amazing the impact it can make on the day.

Yeah Zacs hit and miss with muffins. If no choc chips are visible it's often 'I don't like it' before he tries it. Drives me mad ::)

You may want to call banana bread 'cake' if you need to get her to try it and she doesn't like the sound of 'bread' ;)
Good luck x
