Why are naps & night sleep so different....?
« on: February 02, 2014, 20:29:15 pm »
My DD is nearly 12 weeks old. From about 3 weeks old she only woke once per night for a feed. From 8 weeks she has STTN from 1900-0700 (dream feed 2230-2300). Following our bedtime routine she will often be awake when she is put in her cot, but most of the time she is very drowsy & barely notices - either way once she is in her cot for the night we don't tend to hear a peep from her until the next morning.

Since she was about 6 weeks old she has only taken short naps of about 30 minutes. She was jolting herself awake but that seems to have subsided - she now just seems to wake up gently (I wonder whether the jolting has created a habit of waking?). I can get her to nap for longer if i let her sleep on me and pat/restrain her movement/cover her eyes & have the dummy on standby, or if we are in the car. I try & get at least one longer nap per day by using one of these methods.

My question is what is so different about nap time sleep cycle transitions & night time sleep cycle transitions?

Thanks in advance if anyone has any info that will help me understand the difference between the sleep cycles - if there is one!!

I dont know for sure that there is a difference between sleep cycles, but I have read (here? Not entirely certain on that) that babies usually consolidate/sort night sleep out first before day sleep...certainly was true for us as DD3 just got the hang of longer naps after the 4 month growth spurt (though consequently that also meant she was no longer able to go all night without a feed or two where previously she had!) I totally apop'd her naps before that - either in a wrap, holding etc (hates car/stroller & shh/pat!!) because with two older kids I just needed her to be getting sleep at appropriate times and now we are getting to where she can resettle herself (except for the catnap...totally holding her for that right now ;))

I think some mums have previously found some aspects of this site useful: http://www.parentingscience.com/baby-sleep-tips.html

There's also this info here: SLEEP FACTS
