advice on naps and bed time for almost 18mo please!
« on: February 20, 2014, 00:20:50 am »
hi, my boy was doing 11 hrs at night until about 2ish weeks ago. but as his nap time pushes later in the day (at the moment it's 1hr 45mins - 2 hrs at 12.15)  I'm finding that he's not ready for bed until 8pm. my issue is that although he's going to sleep later at night, he's not waking later the next morning, and in fact he's waking up half hour earlier, so at 6pm than previously (was sleeping 7.30pm-6.30am ish). I have tried his usual bedtime of 7.30 but if he goes into bed at 7.30 he still doesn't go to sleep until 8pm and because he's in there for half hour he tends to start getting stressed because he's just not ready to sleep just then.

my worry is that when his nap moves later say to 12.30, 1, 2pm he wont be going to bed until 9 or 10pm and still getting up at 6am!

should I start thinking about capping his nap?

any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated. thank you :)

That ime isn't usually the case. It could be 18SR or teeth running amok?

You day to me looks good. If you do think it's the nap causing your issues, why don't you try capping for 1week and see what happens?

thanks hena, so you don't think a 14 hr day is too long? I didn't know if it was and that maybe he was getting OT. but if you think 6am start and 8pm bed with a 2hr (max) nap sounds good i'll stick with things before I start capping his nap as he is grumpy if I wake him up!!

its reassuring to know that teeth could be causing this as he has his bottom eye teeth on their way.

if it continues, I will try and cap his nap as you suggest to see what happens.

today he work around 5.40am but went back to sleep after 15 mins or so?? and I drifted back off to sleep and didn't wake up until 6.50am and he work up about then too. I have no idea how much of that time he slept. but anyway, he didn't go back to bed until 12.45!!! but now I don't know how long to let him sleep to get him into bed tonight at a reasonable time. I am thinking about waking him today as such a late wake up is very unusual for him and I don't want him going to bed later than 8pm if he is waking up by 6am. any suggestions on what I should do here for future reference? :)

thanks again!

Tbh i would normally day that a 14h day is too long, it would be for my DD. She's a 13h max. Day girl. I guess I latched on to your note of an 11h night which is good but 8pm to 6pm is clearly not 11h! So is this your day:

WU:6am
Nap: 12.15 (1h45m/2h)
BT: 8pm
