How was the 2nd nap after the 2hr 45 A time?

My little boy can handle a long A time even after a very short nap, so I could always push him so we didn't end up with ridiculously early bedtime, but you might need to do some trial & error.

If you don't think you can push him too much then focus on nap 1 and if you get good first nap the 2nd A will naturally increase and have a knock on for nap 2 and then bedtime...

Thanks again for your advice, we seem to be getting somewhere slowly (although don't want to tempt fate by saying that!)

Just wanted to ask how many total hours in a day 9 month olds need to sleep.  He is sleeping between 12 to 12.5 hours at night currently with a 1 to 1.5 hour nap in the morning but then he refuses the afternoon nap totally unless we're in the car / buggy or he falls asleep feeding.  Then its a 30 - 40 minute nap maximum.  Does this sound about right or do I need to do some more tweaking?

Its looking like this:

6:00 - wu
6:15 - breast feed
07:30 - breakfast
09:30 - nap
10:30 / 11:00 ish - awake and breastfeed
12:00 - lunch
nap after 3hrs or 3hrs 15 depending on how sleepy he looks
breastfeed on wake up
16:00 - tea
17:30 or 17:45 (depending on what time woke from nap) - breastfeed and bed

Do you think it would work better if I tried to extend his A time before 2nd nap even further?

I am so glad you feel you are getting somewhere - I know what a relief it is just to see a bit of a positive change and start hoping there is light at the end if the tunnel!

I think at 9 months one longer & one shorter nap is quite common as babies head towards the 2-1 nap transition, so your nap duration doesn't surprise me, but the fact he is fighting number 2 means there is probably some more tweaking to do.

When you say you LO does 12-12.5 nights is that STTN or are you classing his NWs in there too?

Your last A is incredibly short - is he easy to get to bed & does he stay asleep? If he is waking lots, I think you might have an UT baby & that can be fixed with routine changes.

My LO only ever sleeps 10-10.5 hours a night (not inc NWs) so we have very long days and a late bedtime (otherwise he'd start his day at 4am  :o ) so to me your day looks on the short side - but if you LO is doing fantastic 12.5hr nights straight through, then obviously I'd say don't fix what ain't broken!!  :)

He normally goes into his cot between 5:30pm  to 6pm, he tends to fall asleep when feeding.  The past 3 nights he's woken for 1 or 2 feeds but then fallen straight back to sleep and waking after 12 to 12.5 hours at about 6am.  He tends to have 3.5 hours A after wake up, 3 hours A after first nap and 3 hours A after second nap, before bedtime.

Re-reading your previous replies and advice, if he's fighting 2nd nap I'll try and increase the A time before this nap to 3 hrs 15 mins.  What do you think?

Hope you and you're lo are better kbecks.

Oh sorry, it looked from your schedule like he was waking at 4pm and going to bed at 5:30/45... So I thought your last A was really short!  :) 3 hours makes more sense.

Yes, pushing the 2nd A before the 2nd nap is certainly what I'd go for, just to try & eliminate him fighting it so much - you could definitely go for 3hr 15 for a couple of days and see how it goes...

Do you want to keep BT at 6ish?

BT at 6pm works for us currently so I can spend a bit of quality time with DD before she goes to bed.  When he's a bit older and they can bath together a later BT could work for him but at the minute I'd struggle to be in 2 places at once. Although I'm willing to give anything a try  :)

Unfortunately the red cross is still firmly on the door! Can't shake the sore throat and lo eyes are worse. finding it really difficult not to give her a cuddle as I really don't want her to have my illness!! :(

My naps are pretty much the same in the day with the same nights though I don't have any NF now.  I have tried extending her day with longer A in the day so she'll nap in her cot without a fight but she doesn't sleep any later in the morning. 6.10am and bam she wakes up...would love to put her to bed a bit later at the weekend and have a little lie in but doesn't seem to be her way!

I'd say just revel in the stability you've worked so hard for and you may even see a further benefit in the nights.

 :) :)
