Hi, I havn 't  needed to come on here for a while but things are a bit wonky. Aidan is at pre school and I am working full time. The naps have gone too. Aidan is really tired but waking up early at 6am instead of his usual 7. This would be fine if he wasn't so tired! I try to get him down earlier in the evening but because of my work its virtually impossible and I get him down as early as I can as it is, which is 7pm.
Also when  be wakes early we don't allow him to get up as he has a gro clock set for 7 but he wants to read which is impossible with his black out blind. Should he have a little light he can work himself or will it just encourage him to wake earlier and never go back to sleep? 
I'm confused!

I've just had (or still having?) a period of DS waking earlier but still being tired. Similar age too. I'm able to put him to bed earlier but even with the EBT he was still waking too early and being tired. We seem to be sort of out of it now, I think the EBTs really helped but I see you can't manage this most days - can you do weekends perhaps?
Have you spoken to him about going back to sleep in the morning?  I know you have the gro clock and obviously he understands the rules on that, but an honest chat about needing sleep for energy so he can play well helped here, plus any time he yawned or looked tired in the day we mentioned it in a very supportive way.

I wouldn't give the opportunity to turn a light on and read books pre-7am if that's 'morning' because it goes against what a gro clock is and does, you want him falling back to sleep for that last hour not reading.  However, DS has lights on a timer rather than a gro clock for this very reason, he's always read when he wakes. If you want the option of a lamp you could plug one into a digital timer so that power goes to it at 'morning' (7am) but the lamp doesn't work pre-7am as that is still 'night'.  We just have the lights come on at WU time, it does occasionally wake him if he's shattered and are now doing lie ins at the weekend.

Just wanted to post and 'nod' my head as Z is 3.5 and is also waking early. It's developmental I think.
For us though Z is EW then going back to sleep (after a week of me reinforcing it)

Could you try w2s over a weekend to see if it breaks the habit?

I'll definitely do ebt at the weekend.
Funnily enough we had a chat about getting enough sleep and how it makes you feel etc this morning. Hopefully that will help or I'll try w2s, which I hate!

Yeah I know what you mean about W2S, esp in the night. It didn't work for us for EW but was a life saver on naps when he dropped to 1.
I would keep talking about how sleep helps us feel good etc, and if he does start to wake at his regular time maybe introduce an 'extra sleep' on the weekends by moving the gro clock on 15 or 30 min. I do this now with our timer lights for weekend and 1 or 2 days mid week when he doesn't go to pre-school (so we don't have to be out on time) but I always check with him the night before, he understands so I'm sure your DS would catch on too.

This is what I did. Lots of talking about needing to feel rested when he gets up for the day so he can last the day and not feel tired and grumpy. Also lots of talk about when morning is, and how to help himself go back to sleep if he EW.

When Z EW ATM it's like he is wide awake, with a million thoughts running through his mind :o he's almost wired. I'm certain it's developmental. Anyway, today was the first day in a week he didn't EW and slept 12 hrs. So I'm hopeful things will get back to where they were.

Yeah w2s can be a lifesaver, but it can also be hit and miss at this age.

We have a gro clock coming in the post :)

Well 12hours last night so that was great! Hopefully the talk has worked. We talked this morning about how much better he feels having had a proper sleep.
