Baby prefers bottle
« on: May 07, 2014, 18:40:23 pm »
I am so upset writing this. I've gone back to work (2 days a week) and my lo is now refusing to nurse. He will in the middle of the night and first thing in the morning but that's it. I've been giving him pumped milk the rest of the time. I'm heartbroken. Any suggestions. I can't stop the bottle since that's what he gets when I'm not around.

Aw (((hugs )))) danaadell.
Your LO is about the same age as my Little Man, how many feeds/ how much is he getting from bottle? How long is your day/ how long are you away from him?
What I've done is BF in morning before I leave for work, he gets solids breakfast at the childminders, solids lunch at the childminders, sips of water and I BF on my return from work between 3:30-4:30. He then has some finger foods (some fruit/veggies in batons, for eg) with us at dinner time and BF and bedtime.
Would a schedule like that work at all for you?

He's only 3 months right now, so no solids yet.  This month I am working an evening shift on thursdays and fridays (from 2pm thru 11pm) so my husband is putting him to bed. In june I will be working from 7:30 to 4pm. I am just so upset over this and I know my lo can feel how stressed I am about it.  I was crying and he started crying...

Hugs. I'm sure it is tough to be away from your LO at such a young age and now with the bottle preference it is even harder.

Can you not give a bottle on the 5 days a week that you don't work?

Obviously I don't know anything about your work commute etc. but is it an option for your DH to bring your LO to your place of work to feed him on your breaks?

Also check out our FAQ on nursing strikes. Is my baby weaning or is it a nursing strike?

Oh Hun, sorry :( I didn't spot that you're in the States and you guys do your dates in reverse to ours so obviously my suggestion is no good to you :(
I'm so sorry for you and can imagine your upset must be immense. This must be a common enough problem, so hopefully someone with BTDT experience can offer some advice to you.
(((Hugs)))) be kind to yourself.

Have you tried changing the bottle? Medela does Calma and there is one other Dr Browns (not sure of the name), that do a bottle a baby has to actively suck to get milk out of. That way they don't get "lazy" and demand the easier option.
You can also try changing for the s nipple on the bottle.
