11 month old Champion sleeper no more :(
« on: May 14, 2014, 15:56:05 pm »
My LO is now 11 months old...

We've had some muddled sleep times for the last couple weeks... I feel like I'm losing my grip on changing as he needs to change.

EASY:

E7 (most of the time)
S  About 11:15 to 11:20 now

Was sleeping fist nap for 1.5 hours... now wakes at 45 minutes in several days.

E about 12:30
S about 4:00 or 4:15 but have to cap at 4:15 for bedtime at 8 but since this is not working well, bedtime is going to 8:30...

Any help or suggestions to transition this possible early 2-1 shift would be great!

Thanks,
Marcia

Sorry you havent had any replies yet!  I posted a reply to your update on your other thread, I would be happy to move it over if you want to have it all on this thread instead :)

Just had a look at Tink's answer on the other thread and I agree.  Looks like it's time to start trimming that morning nap and going for a long PM nap. Have a look at this:
From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

And really don't worry, you haven't done anything wrong.  It'll be fine :)

Thanks weaver...

My LO is now doing about two 45 min naps.  One around 11:20 and the other around 3:50ish pm.

I think I will work on pushing him for more A time in the morning so AM nap extends and he goes down around 11:35 or 11:40ish.  What do you think?

He seems like he's getting back to his old happy self...now that the tooth broke through... but not sure if naps will settle in as before or not.

What do you think about my plan?

BT is still about 8pm maybe 5 minutes till.

Thanks!

Sounds like a good plan to me!  I always did long am short pm with my LOs because they both liked to have very long A before bed.  Hopefully if you increase that morning A he can get a good nap in!

Hi Tinkerbell...

I see the thought of hanging onto two naps as long as possible...  with this in mind but also wanting to respect LO's needs...

1. Should I still wake from morning nap after about an hour or so, so that PM catnap does not fall so late?

2.  Or should I just let him sleep till he wakes from AM nap and play with PM CN?

Thanks!

I always let hem sleep up to 1.5hrs, then moved cn accordingly.  If they refused cn I just let them refuse and did early bed.

:)  Big sigh...

Turns out that my little champion sleeper is almost wearing his title again!  He cut a tooth and maybe spurted a bit... back to 1.5 hours of sleep in the morning nap and capping a later CN to 30 min... so far so good.

Spoke too soon... night wakings for the last three nights... usually before midnight (BT at 8)  I think his afternoon CN needs to be capped even more or a later bedtime... any thoughts?  HIs morning nap is back to 1.5 hours but going down from 11:20 till 12:50.

Thanks!

Hi Marcia, we always seem to be going through the same stuff!!

For this last week, I've been trying the one nap thing. Our days were getting hideously long. I've extended the first A to 5hrs now and the naps are extending from 1.5hrs to 2-2.5hrs. Means no more time for a CN! EBT has meant a 12-hour NT sleep again so in total I think she's actually getting more sleep in a 24-hour period. Don't know if you're ready to take the plunge yet, but if you are, there's a few of us in the same boat on the 2-1 transition thread xx

Aw... sorry... love it when one thing works and you think you've got the problem licked and then it bites on the back side!  Argh!  I'm SURE that my LO is simply getting too much sleep during the day... so will be diligent about pushing his wake time by about 10 minutes every three days (hope that's not unreasonable) and then capping his CN more and more in the PM... will have to make the jump sooner or later but would like him to be going down at 12 before I play around with no CN and EBT... any thoughts?  Sounds like your little one and my little one must be conspiring together!  :)

I think that pushing her AM A time to 12 might be a big jump but not sure what you were jumping from.  I would not be able to go from what we are doing 11:20 to 12 in one day... might want to consider that... slow steps.  I think they advise 10-15 min increments every three days.

I think they're definitely in cahoots!!

Before everything went a little crazy today (have people round and she had to go back for a nap at 7.45 after waking at 5.30?!) we were doing this:

Wu 6.15
A 5hrs
S 11.15-1.15 (or once 1.45!)
A 5hrs
S 6.15

She was doing 12-hr nights again which was absolutely lovely compared to the 10.5/11 we had with that 15-20mins CN. We only did it for 3 days then I tried to go back to a two nap day the other day to keep OT at bay and because she had a 1.5hr nap then she refused the CN  ::)

I suppose it depends on how he deals with OT? Mine has never done the 30-mins OT nap thing, she just sleeps longer it seems. 10-15mins is the recommendation as OT can creep up, Tracy said to hold for 3 days to see if that makes a difference in nap length. You still cap that first nap don't you? I stopped doing that just to see how long she'd sleep, then try for a CN, if that didn't work then EBT. I think we just kind of fell into it!

Hey Kellyjs!

Yep... you and I could write a book!  12 hour nights!  Is that possible!  I reckon so... too chicken to try that right now... well, maybe just too early in the game.

Our first change today was 1st nap at 11:35 instead of 11:20... went fine but I capped at 1.5 for now.  I had done this later 1st nap a couple weeks ago but it was a disaster... discovered the teething going on :(  He also did a 15+ min nap for CN and BT at 8.  If he does an NW I'll have to tweak?  Or maybe just stay the same for 3-4 days so he gets used to things and then make the next change...  But, may just stick with this for now until it's "broken" before worrying about extending his morning A time.

Once he is going down at noon, I'll let him sleep till he wakes to get a feel for what he tends to need and then figure on EBT...  but I like your thought too about just seeing how long he'll sleep now and then either CN or EBT depending... I'm a big chicken though... through myself into awful postpartum anxiety last fall due in part to my extreme worrying about his napping, crying etc... so am afraid to take plunges, but these forums have been great and I think I'm getting the hang of things...

I don't blame you at all.. It's very scary isn't it?! I'd keep with the two naps as long as possible. DD was playing up at BT only with a 15mins CN so I knew something had to change.

I'm taking it very slowly though. Yesterday was a complete departure from our usual routine and I didn't know what I was doing, don't like that at all! She seems to have caught up on some sleep though so I think we're back to square one... I'll have to see if she can do 1 nap today.

I'm so sorry you had the pp anxiety. That must have been horrible. These boards are fantastic, they've really helped me too as I'm such a control freak.  ;).  It just helps knowing others are going through the same thing doesn't it? I think you're doing wonderfully  :D
