7 month old only wants letdown
« on: May 18, 2014, 22:36:17 pm »
Hi!
My 7 month old boy has been very fussy on the breast for the last few weeks, and has taken to only feeding until my letdown has finished and then gets grumpy and pops on and off for the rest of the feed.  So he is really only consistently drinking for 2-3 mins each side.  I've been trying compressions, and I always feed him in a quiet room with no distractions.  Even the ceiling is interesting to look at mid feed!

His naps have also become short and I'm worried he isn't getting enough and wakes up hungry.  I've tried feeding him more often and trying to keep him on the breast for as long as possible.  I even gave him a bottle of formula yesterday just out of curiosity, and he downed the lot with no break, and slept so well for his following nap.  He has only had formula once or twice before and doesn't have a dummy either.  I expressed after the formula feed and got 140ml which I think is pretty good.

Do you think he has just got lazy and only wants the letdown?  Is there anyway I can extend the letdown, or is that a case of upping my supply?

(Just as a note, he is iron deficient but is on supplements and it's back up on the way to normal level)

I'd have thought perhaps he's getting all he needs in that time :) certainly by that age DD would take max 5 mins per feed (she fed single-sided) and if I tried to get her to take more she'd just mess around.  It may have been coincidence that the good nap happened after a bottle of formula.  Have you posted on one of the sleep boards for nap advice?

Hmmm....maybe your right.  I guess he would keep going if he was hungry.  Just had a bout of gastro myself and he fed really well today, so probably not a supply issue.  I'm struggling with the naps as when he had low iron he could only stay awake for 40 mins, so now we are trying to work out his ideal awake time. But that's a whole different subject!!

Do feel free to post if you think we could help with the awake times :)

You could also try feeding in a dark room immediately on wake up before he gets interested in the world.

Also breast compressions my help keep him interested. Breast compression

I'll try the feeding straight after a nap, though they are still a bit short and awake times are very wonky from the low iron.  I've been doing compressions and it sometimes works.  I'll put a post up on the getting back on track board about his routine.  Thanks very much for the advice!
