When did you stop swaddling? Still swaddling?
« on: June 09, 2014, 23:48:06 pm »
When did you stop swaddling? If still swaddling, how old is your LO?

Do you use a woombie or blanket?

LO is now 11 weeks and finding her hands to suck on (no paci) and not sure if she is ready to change to grow bag with arms out- DS was 4 months... You can see her on the monitor trying to get her hand through the woombie...

I think we stopped somewhere in the realm of 4 - 5 months...over time.  First with 1 arm out, then 2.  We never transitioned to a grow bag though, just went from swaddle to nothing.

Ugh ds is in a woombie. He needs a tighter swaddle atm, the love to dream suits with hands up he just stretches out and goes nuts. I atremped no swaddle and it wasn't pretty....  anyway he isn't rolling back to front yet so I may have a little time. I wish wish wish he could go into a grobag, it is getting chilly at night and would be easier to deal with than swaddle and blanket pinning him down.

I stopped swaddling at 10 weeks.  I was so frightened by the SIDS guidance that I only ever had him swaddled if he was napping in the same room as me, where I could keep an eye on him, or for the first part of the night (again in the same room as the first part of night sleep was in a travel cot in the family room), I transferred to his bed with no swaddle after the DF.  Well, at 10 weeks he totally refused to nap in the travel cot and after a couple of days I tried him in his night bed upstairs and he instantly settled to sleep. From then I only swaddled for WD cuddle then removed it for putting down to sleep.
We did have a gro bag but I found he got cold arms so switched to a fleece sleep suit with full arms and legs/feet.

Both of mine stayed in the swaddle til about 7 mos, they loved being swaddled!  And I loved it too, it really helped them to sleep.  For LO1, we used our own sheets or a light blanket and wrapped him, so it was very adjustable, for LO2 we mostly used the Summer Infant Swaddle Me.

There are some proprietory swaddles which are adjustable - you can leave out one arm, or two, and it changes to basically being a sleeping bag.  Have you tried swaddling her so her preferred hand is closer to her face?  Some LOs will suck their hand through the fabric.  If you leave her hand out completely, she might need a bit of help going to sleep as she's still so little, she may have a tendency to flail her arm about, but perhaps not if she's sucking her hand!

We swaddled until about 10mos here, using a woombie from about 2 months onwards, when she regularly broke out of own homemade sheet swaddles. E really tried to suck her hands but she loved her dummy and would knock it out if she wasn't swaddled. We ended up weaning it first trying the woombie with the arm holes that could be unpoppered at my choosing and trying one arm out but ended up going cold turkey during a really hot patch in the summer when she was sleeping in a nappy.

We'd tried earlier but it really didn't suit her, like Anne's LOs she really loved the swaddling, and even had to swaddled for feeding when I was BFing as the midwives recommended to stop her hands getting in the way. When she was ready the weaning was really easy, it didn't make a difference to her sleep at all (but then that might be because it was a very unsettled patch anyway so I didn't notice).

E didn't roll over until 18 months though  ::) so I had no worries about that

8 months here. Cold turkey into a light sleep sack. She was also a Woombie baby, and needed it to be quite snug, but it turns out she is a tummy sleeper and the transition wasn't too bad! It figures, DH and DS are also tummy sleepers!

Thanks ladies... I do not think she is going to roll any time soon, and definitely still has the startle reflex, so I will keep up the swaddle. Maybe Iwill try the convertible with one arm out just to see...

So now we are 12 weeks and she has been trying to get to her hands through the woombie. So we got a convertible woombie where you can let out on or two arms while in the swaddle. Tried one arm for last two naps- first nap was typical 45 minutes and worked well. This last nap not so sure... She was sucking like crazy on her hand and would cry on and off- is that a sign she needs to keep arms in? She has not yet rolled over but always lays on her side every time she sleeps.

stopped cold turkey at 8 weeks when he learned to roll over (and did so in his swaddle--super scary to find!). 1 week of crap sleeping then he was used to it.
