how to teach baby to fall asleep by himself
« on: June 16, 2014, 14:03:53 pm »
Hi

Im just wondering what to do to make a baby to fall asleep without my help. Is it possible in this age or does it comes later naturally. As for now I lullaby my LO in my arms for around 5 to 10 minutes, put her in a cot while she is still awake but almost sleep, and she falls asleep. I swaddle her. I tried shush and pat method but it seems only to wake her. What can I do? Its not a problem for me right now, as it doesnt take much time. But Im afraid she might like it to much and she won't be able to sleep by her self later on. Please advise me.

Thank you

It sounds like your LO is pretty tiny and I would absolutely take my time with any form of gentle sleep training. I would wait until 3-4 months or so and then get started with shh/pat and see how things go! Have a look here and enjoy your new LO!Shush-pat - How to Some LOs need their own variation on shh/pat and that is fine to take your time and find what works out for the two of you. Have you got white noise going? That can really help.
Sleep Training  - the early days
Hope this helps and congratulations on your baby!

No she's 4 month old already and the method you mentioned doesn't work as she think is a playtime

Hi Paulina,
I have posted on your other thread. I think at this age they really wake up and their sleep habits change. (Hence the dreaded 4 mth sleep regression) I notice your LO is swaddled and often during this time they want to learn to self settle but can't as they need their hands to do so.

I think it's worth weaning the swaddle if her startle reflex has gone, or at least offering an arm out for settling and introducing a lovey.

If you don't want to wean the swaddle then it's a matter of slowly weaning yourself - with whatever method works well for now. Sometie s it's all in the timing too so worki out the right A time for her. Hth
