10 week old naps
« on: August 26, 2014, 03:29:29 am »
My 10 week old DD has a pretty predictable routine from day-to-day which includes 3 short naps and one suuuper-long nap. I'm not sure whether I should let her go this way or try to extend the naps (usually she wakes up happy and I have a 20-month old DS so I end up just getting her up and continuing on with our day)? Here is her usual EASY

E 8am

S 130-5 (this is the long nap I always have to wake her from)

S 7-745

W/D 8:30 -- bath, lotion/massage, pajamas, swaddle, top-up feeding
S 9

NW at 4a and 6a--feeding at both.

A few things to note: She's a tummy sleeper and so far I have not been doing a dream feed because she's been sleeping so well I don't want to disrupt her sleep. Sometimes in the morning she'll only get 1 nap because we go out for errands and she REFUSES to fall asleep in the carseat. As you can see, there's some APOP going on because I'm also chasing around my toddler. I end up nursing her to sleep for the long nap because that's right in the middle of his lunch time. She's also doing all naps in the swing UNLESS my DS is asleep and I have time to do shh/pat with her (which she responds to very well). My hubby will be home for 3 days this weekend so I plan on working hard on independent sleep with her then (although she settles pretty well after her feedings during the night without any shh/pat).

I'm stressing about the APOP because I do not want to create any bad habits, but at the same time I'm so overwhelmed and I just want her to sleep! I still haven't quite figured out a way to put her down for a nap with my DS with me in the room. He ends up crawling over to her bassinet and making lots of noise.

A couple of questions:
-Should I try to extend her morning naps? I think her A time is too short and that's why she's short napping and waking happy, but I'm having a hard time reading her tired signs because they're so inconsistent or when I do notice them, it's too late. Part of me is okay with the 2 short morning naps because her afternoon nap is lining up with DS, what do you think?
-If I'm unable to extend her naps, should I feed on W/U?

I would agree with you, I think you can try to extend the morning 'A' time a bit, 15 minutes could make a HUGE difference.  I would also recommend capping her super long nap at 2hrs and offering her a 45 minute cat nap around 4:30/5.  However, this would mean aiming for an earlier bed time of about 7pm.  What do you think?
Having said all that, you know your baby best and especially with another LO zipping around, it can be challenging.  If you do decide to make any changes, remember that you need to give it a solid week to see whether it will be effective.

Hi, sorry for the delay in response! I wanted to give it some time with the new awake time. We've made some progress. She's still short-napping most mornings (except yesterday I was able to get a 1.5hr morning nap, first time ever!), but she's napping in the bassinet more than the swing which is great and is responding really well to shh/pat. I have been trying to get her to bed early (like 7) since we brought her home from the hospital but she usually doesn't fall asleep until 9/930. I've slowly been moving bed time earlier and earlier which seems to be working now that she really understands the bedtime routine--tonight she went down easily at 8.

Here's today's EASY:
E 8

S 930-1015
E 1030

S 1145-1230
E 1

S 130-330

S 5-545 (CN)
E 6

W/D 730: Bath, lotion, pajamas, swaddle, top-up feeding
S 8

She seems to be doing well with the 1hr 30mins right now. I tried 1hr 40mins and she was too overtired to fall asleep. I have a few questions:
1.) If I get a 45 minute nap, how long should her next awake time be? Do I feed when she wakes or at 3hrs? I know she can go three hours, but because of her erratic naps she's eating more often.
2.) Most days she's having 4 naps because of the short morning naps. When I'm able to get those naps longer (which I know will happen as she approaches 4 months), does she go to three 1.5-2hr naps or two 1.5-2hr naps and a cat nap? I can't remember what we did with my son.
