17 month old only sleeps 1 hour
« on: September 04, 2014, 03:43:30 am »
Hi.

My little boy transitioned to 1 sleep around 8 weeks ago but this 1 sleep seems to be quite hit or miss - when I say miss I mean he only sleeps for 1 hour.

He generally gets up at 7am (although has been waking closer to 6.30 lately), breaky plays etc, lunch at 11.30 or 12 and down for nap at 12.15 or 12.30.

12.30 had seems to be yielding a sleep of 1.5 hours or longer but the last few days he's gone back to waking (in tears)  1 hour after going to sleep, and will not go back to sleep.

He is generally asleep at around7pm each night, however last night was 8pm as we were out. Unless he is unwell he will STTN.

Today we put him down at 12.15 in case this helped and he still woke 1 hour later.

He does daycare Monday and Tuesday and I have little control over that but it's all over the place there too.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi!

The day doesn't look too bad - it could be the onset of the 18m SR?

When you put him for a nap, does he seem ready to you? What's his mood like in WU? Any sign of teeth?

We purposely keep DD3's nap to an hour as otherwise she doesn't sttn! But she wakes up happy and ready to go...have you tried pushing the nap a wee bit later? We have a similar wake up and do the nap at 12:45/1:00 generally.

Heidi is Elliotte down to one nap a day? What time is her bedtime?

Yes she has been since 7.5 months  :o. Wake up is anywhere between 6:45/7:30 am and bedtime between 8:00/8:30. She is super low sleep needs! Sucks in that I don't get a break really but good because she basically is on the same bedtime/wake up as my 6 & 8 year olds which means she is flexible with their schedules.

Wow Heidi!

I'm at the other end of the scale R is HSN - 3yrs ok and still needs an hour in the day and 11 at night, go figure! I'm sure it'll all end soon though.

So Nini, how is your LO faring on a short nap?

It depends on the day and what works best for our family in the evening. If we have no evening plans we do an early BT, and if we do then I can usually get  a 30 minute nap at around 4:30 and then have a later  BT.  I guess I just feel pressure that she "should" be sleeping 2+ hours if she is only taking once  nap.

I don't think there's any amount a LO 'should' sleep - just look at the difference between Elliotte and Ruby - I think that days it all.

I've always gone by this theory - if it ain't broke don't fix it. So if the nights are working and your LO is happy with the naps that work for you and family, stick with it. If however your NT sleep is disturbed or if your LO is still tired etc then I'd think about trying to get a longer nap yk?

What do you think?

Just chipping in to say I agree - it's about what's working for you.  My little boy has just turned 18 months and has been on a 1hr nap for months now (in fact I think I need to start capping to 45 minutes really, to get good nights), whereas my daughter didn't drop to a 1hr nap til she was 20 months.  My friend's little girl only went down to a 1hr nap aged 4.5!  I know what you mean - I struggled to accept lily was ok on 1hr when she dropped to that. I was sure it meant something (that she was OT or UT or something). But it was just what she needed.

Totally agree and tbh wish I had clued in sooner as I kept trying to keep her on an age appropriate A time as a tiny baby and it just wasn't working!

In our case, it seems that putting him down closer to noon yields a longer sleep - 1.5 -2.5 hours. I think that 12.30 is a bit too late for him to get a good sleep. If he wakes after 1 hour he wakes in tears and grumpy, if he wakes after a longer sleep he wakes much happier...

Then I would stick with the nap time that works or him if that is possible? You seemed to have worked out what gives your LO a longer nap so I'd stick with it, esp if the short nap makes him grumpy. Equally, if you end up with a short nap, don't stress, just EBT if that's possible?
