6 weeks and terrible napper
« on: September 16, 2014, 13:40:03 pm »
I am at a loss here. My first child responded great to every suggestion in the baby whisperer book, but the new baby is NOT. I try to follow his cues to put him down for his naps (yawns etc). I take him right upstairs, swaddle, white noise, hold him upright and pat back to calm. Then I lay him down and keep patting to try and get him to sleep. At this point he acts like he is trying to do a sit up and is kicking. He get all worked up and i have to pick him up again to calm him because i CANNOT get him to calm down in the crib. Once I FINALLY get him to sleep he only sleeps for about 20 min and then starts kicking again. He has reflux but is on meds that are helping a lot. His crib is inclined. He DOESNT do this at night, but he also doesn't sleep in his crib at night (he is in the pack n play newborn napper in our room). This seems to be the pattern for EVERY nap. I can't sit in his room for and hour trying to get him to sleep every nap because i have a 2 year old running around. PLEASE HELP! I can't tell if he is under tired or overtired.

Hugs, do you think the reflux is fully controlled? :-\ 20 min naps for my reflux boys were always pain.
Does he have a paci? Sounds like he may be a bit touchy/spirited and a paci may help him calm to sleep. They are also very good for reflux.

At 6 weeks I'd do whatever works tbh. Do you have a wrap? Will he nap in that or the buggy or car, or swing? X

He has been on the reflux meds for a week now and he has stopped the pain cries thankfully. I noticed yesterday that he was going down for naps easier but is waking every 20-30 min still. Several times yesterday he put himself back to sleep (first time ever) but continued waking every 20-30 min. I'm assuming this is the end of every sleep cycle but I'm not sure how to help him transistion without waking up. He hates his car seat but will sleep if I am driving (as soon as I stop he wakes up), and he usually is quiet in the stroller but awake. I'm just happy he isn't crying in pain anymore ;)

A sleep cycle is more 30-40 mins. 20 is the transition from light to deep. Maybe he's struggling with discomfort when sleeping as he's flat? Can you apop through the 20 mins at all to get a longer nap? Shh/patting, or PU for a cuddle (he's so little I'd do whatever works really) does popping the paci back in help if he has one

I've been trying to do that but he still seems to wake up. I'm thinking it's still the reflux even though he seems much better because yesterday I had him in his swing for a nap and he started gagging in his sleep. I'm hoping it gets better once he has been on the meds a little longer. Reflux sucks.

Oh that's no good. Reflux does indeed suck. I have ruder words to describe it but I'm sure you already know what they could be.

What is his weight and med dosage etc, maybe he needs a review of them?
