Transitioning to crib from vertical sleeper....
« on: October 10, 2014, 22:28:13 pm »
Our daughter (just under 3 mos old) has been sleeping in a Rock n' Play (vertical rocker/not meant for sleeping) since she was brought home from the hospital.  We thought that we had issues with reflux so the vertical position was recommended by our doc.  She is over colic and is becoming a very efficient sleeper and I feel it is time to start sleep training with her...first up-getting her back in to her crib.  Granted, this was never MY idea to put her in the Rock n' Play but we didn't have her older brother's room done (completely gutted room restoration) and I am wondering what the best way is to transition her to her crib?!!!  Help...all attempts so far have been for naught.

And...here's where it gets sticky. I am a work from home photographer who has a very inconsistent schedule; about three mornings a week my kiddos go to daycare for about three hours.  I hate to think that we are going to put all of this work into training just to have the weekdays totally screw it up.

When we have put her in her crib, we lay her down 99% asleep; which is what we have been doing with her in the rock n' play.  Should we start wide awake?  She draws her knees up to her chest...and of course she is swaddled.  Suggestions?  We lay her in her crib and she definitely is used to it...just not for sleeping.

This is spot on, start by laying her down drowsy and then work back to laying her down awake. This sounds like a good time for you to think about her wind-down, you may already have a wind-down routine, but see link below if not.
What does a good wind down consist of (Includes 4S ritual)

Has she had a good EASY while in the swing?  If so, then it's just a case of getting her used to the crib. If not, now is a great time to think about her routine. Average A time for this age is 1 hr 20-30 mins, some babies get less, some more.

It might be a good idea to let her lie in there during A time and have a bit of a wriggle about to get used to it.  It may take a few days for her to get used to it.  Perhaps raising the head of her mattress might make it feel less of a change.

I know that anxiety, yes :)  Two things to say here: (1) LOs are much more flexible than we give them credit for, she will probably adapt to what happens there and what happens at home being different (2) if you get a good routine going, you should be able to tell daycare when she needs her nap, so things might not be that different after all.
