board games...for xmas
« on: October 25, 2014, 14:06:15 pm »
Looking for a board game for H for xmas, if M can play too then great but not a major issue.
We have

Guess who
kids charades
snakes and ladders/ludo
jenga
lego pirate game
pop to the shops
crazy chefs
another orchard shopping game.

Has anyone got timeshock? Think that is what it's called, I wondered about that.

Any suggestions welcome x

We have buckaroo which he quite likes, also the aliens game from the elc (I can't remember the name, you bash aliens with a hammer to pick them up) but not sure how long they will last.

Uno? Monopoly? Scrabble?

We played chess on holiday and DS loved it! So may be worth it?

I bought a Cars version of monopoly (junior) for my nephew last year (he had just turned 5) and my sister says he now plays that really well and loves it now at nearly 6, so we're going to get it for DS this year.

Just bought the junior version of Rush Hour for my boy and he LOVES it, spends hours playing it - it is a solo game though so not sure that is what you are after.  Not sure how old your boy is but the original one (not the junior version we have) is for around 7 or 8 years and up I think.

Dobble is my 2 kids favorite game and has been for ages - great family game too.   Monopoly is a hit here too (we have the junior version).

Yes we have Rush Hour and it is a good game!

We are also getting DS Catan Junior
http://www.amazon.co.uk/KOSMOS-697402-Madagascar-Catan-Junior/dp/B0088UZYHS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1414248277&sr=8-2&keywords=catan+junior

That is the one we are getting, obvs the German is not an issue for us, but once you have read the rules once the fact that it is in German is irrelevant, there is no reading in the game.  I think there are other junior versions of Catan that might be in English?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mayfair-MFG3025-Catan-Junior/dp/B007N0KZ64/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1414248277&sr=8-1&keywords=catan+junior

It's triple the price and for the fact that you only need to download English rules online, I'd get the other one!

But we have played it with friends before and it is good. I like it because it is a combination of skill and chance but not much skill is really needed, yk? And on each player's turn, everyone gets something and gets to do something. So you are not sitting around bored while everyone takes their turns. And there are not really any "bad luck" turns either.   I also enjoyed playing it rather than other kids games where I groan and have to put on an act about having fun, yk?

My ILs gave us their old Crokinole board. The boys love it - though I'm not sure where you'd get one!

Ooh, a solo game! That would be much encouraged here at times!

DS loves Downfall - and can even play it by the rules  ;D

He also likes Frustration but I modify the rules a bit there!

I'm getting him Slug in a Jug for Christmas as he loves rhymes  :)
