What is your favourite Christmas picture book?
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:13:23 am »
Each year we buy L a new Xmas book to read during advent.

Wondering about getting The Jolly Chirstmas Postman or The Lighthouse Keeper's Christmas this year.

But I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has any ideas of Xmas books they love.

My kids LOVED this one http://www.amazon.com/Mortimers-Christmas-Manger-Karma-Wilson/dp/1416950494/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1416399571&sr=8-1&keywords=mortimer+christmas+mouse&pebp=1416399574762

(It does tell the story of the nativity so not sure if it meets what you are looking for).

The lightkeepers christmas is a bit longer than average - I would say its a nice picture book for a year 1/ year 2 really.

Christmas postman is great. My 2 love all the letters.

I also likes Mog's Christmas. I love loads of Christmas books really, but my mind is a bit blank as I haven't got them out yet  ::).

Thanks for the ideas everyone :)

I haven't heard of lots of them - great to have new ideas to check out!

Is it longer than the lighthouse keeper's lunch then?

L is quite good with long stories (if she likes them of course). We read fantastic mr fox the other week in four sessions.  She wanted me to read more each time but I had to stop cos we had H with us and she was getting bored/up to mischief... She also enjoys the enormous crocodile which is also quite long isn't it. How does the lighthouse keeper's Xmas compare?

We have a couple of Mog books and L likes them so Mog's Xmas might be a good one.

We love Raymond Briggs' Father Christmas
Oh yes I'd forgotten about that one! Good idea !

This one is just beautiful

http://www.amazon.co.uk/This-Star-Joyce-Dunbar/dp/0385406029/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1416428589&sr=1-1&keywords=this+is+the+star

It's the nativity story and it builds line by line as you go through the book and the lines are repeated (so every page starts This is the star etc). The illustrations are stunning! My two love it, but maybe not as much as me - it gives me goose bumps!

She may be a bit old for it but I love Dear Santa by Rod Campbell - same format as Dear Zoo.

Can't remember how many times I've read it - comes out every year for my classes and I think I read it every night to DD (and now DS) during December - now that DD is older she will probably read that to me/DS and then will choose one of our other Christmas books.

Think I have enough books for one a day in December! But can't remember what they are - need to dig them out soon.

MJ&N recommended a chapter book on another thread (Christmas Mystery I think?) which I think I might get to read with DD as she's just starting to love chapter books.

ETA: Actually cath, I have a feeling you know the book MJ&N was talking about - think you may already have it?

Prob a similar length to others I guess, so fine if they like longer stuff. I find Jacob does - but really he likes the sound of my voice rather than gets the story iyswim?!), Megan would be fine too but it wouldn't be a favourite iyswim?

It lacks that true Christmas charm in a way. A tale about the lighthouse at Christmas rather than a Christmas Classic I guess.
