they won't eat a 'cooked meal'
« on: December 03, 2014, 12:51:43 pm »
So the boys had hand foot and mouth and since then won't eat any sort of cooked meal.  Before they were eating home cooked food mashed but now they won't eat anything remotely cooked. Tried going back to puree thinking it was lumps but no joy. Tried veg meat etc as finger food but still no joy. They'll eat sandwiches type tea no problem and banana. At a loss.

Can you put veg/meat in the sandwiches for tea?

Will they eat yogurt? You can hide pureed veggies in there, especially sweet like squash and yams and carrots with some ginger and/or cinnamon and/or maple syrup. (Curry was another favorite of both my kids with those veg at that age.) So cooked food, but cold instead of hot.

For starters how on EARTH are they 14 months old?!?!?   :o   :o   :o

Scrambled eggs? You can chop broccoli very, very tinny (just the tops) into scrambled eggs, and add a bit of cheese...? French toast? Sweet potato fries that you slice yourself and bake in the oven?

Is it that they are scared the food will hurt their mouth?

Deb what doesn't help is that they're still soy and dairy free so we're also quite limited.

Lili about 3wks since they're better.

Anne cos of their allergies we've held off egg so far. We've tried their 'meal' as finger food but I'll def try sweet potato chips!

Could it just be their not hungry??

Maybe they are still recovering?  Keep at the BRAT?  maybe easier for their little tummies.  Would it be ok to give them peanut butter?

Laura from my own experience, I say to still just offer them the hot meal and if they don't eat it then they don't eat it. Their choice.  Your job is to prepare the food and decide what it is, their choice is to put it in their mouths or not.  This is the age where DH and I went really really really wrong and offered whatever it was DS would eat, saying it was because he was teething, etc etc etc, and I have regretted it every day since.

If they are eating sandwiches and bananas and such at other times in the day then you know they are getting food - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack and then if they don't want dinner then so be it.  But still only offer them what you are making.

Agree with Mashi and your DH! Offer your usuals and then maybe a bit of toast as a snack? It could be that they just fancy nice simple plain foods as they get back to full fitness  :)

This was the age when m decided that there were only 4 meals that she would eat (one of those being crackers, raisins and cheese.. ::)) and we stuck to it and offered her what we wanted her to eat and she got over it - took about 6 months. One book which is really good is 'finger foods for babies and toddlers' by jennie maizels - loads of really good ideas, and easy to adapt for dairy/soy free and also quite a few recipes that you can add/hide veggies and so on.

Hi, I just wanted to say- look out in about 6 weeks post illness for finger and toe nails starting to peel from the middle of finger. It's pretty common but it may not always happen. It's been 5 months since my son had Hand foot and mouth and the very last nail has just fallen off. Just wanted to give you the heads up if they are cranky in a couple weeks and you can't figure out why. It's a bit sore for them you see

Thanks :)
They did have patches of peeling skin on their feet which I assumed was from it as well.

E got a really good cook book for Christmas which might have some stuff in it that would work for them - it's the Ella's Kitchen Big Book of Baking.  Lots of things which make good finger foods, and veggies in everything.  I made the sausage rolls with veggies in which were really tasty (and one of my children thought so too!), and squidgy potato fingers (with broccoli and leek) which all of them liked.

I'd say still serve cooked meals but maybe keep them a bit plain while their mouths recover.
