3-month-old only eats 70ML in 7 hours???
« on: January 09, 2015, 05:26:56 am »
my boy is 3-month-old , mix feeding, used to have bottle for dream feeding (and this the only time using bottle), but he doesn't like taking bottle at that time, so I think maybe change to day time, started 2 days ago,I tried to feed him with bottle at noon time, I just want to keep bottle, but it looks like my boy is dropping bottle.
today, last breast feeding in the morning was 11:30am, 4 hours later which is 3:30pm, fed him with bottle (didn't feed him earlier because I know he doesn't like bottle, and thinking wait longer time so he is hungry then it's easier to use bottle), he only took 40ML (and it took half hour), cried--> time to sleep, I thought maybe he would be hungry after sleep,he slept 2 hours, when he woke up, it's 6:30, fed him with bottle again, only took 30ML, so in 7 hours, he only took 70ML, nothing else, diaper is dry. I tried to breast feeding after, he only took one side.

it really concerns me, how come he is not eating? if he hates/doesn't like bottle, when he is hungry, he should take it right? does it mean he is not hungry? it's impossible, it was 7 hours!!! how can a 3-month-old boy doesn't feel hungry after 7 hours???

should I keep doing this? bottle feeding at noon? if yes, what about he doesn't eat or just take tiny amount?

I really need help on this matter, your help is greatly appreciated.

If he is mainly BF he is probably just rubbish with the bottle. It's a completely different way of sucking, many babies find it easier, but equally plenty of BFF babies will just take the bare minimum and hold out for a BF.

Did he feed a lot later to compensate??

If you want to keep a bottle I would at least give it a few days to see if it improves.

Keep an eye on now much he feeds in 24 hrs and how many wet nappies in 24hrs rather than what happened in a shorter space of time.

Otherwise reflux babies food refuse a lot  :-\.

Yep sounds like he just doesn't like the bottle. It is very common. No, he won't necessarily take a bottle even when hungry. I wouldn't withhold the breast for so long because as you saw from the lack of wet nappies he will start to get dehydrated.
Many people have success offering the bottle at each feed and then just giving the breast 5 mins later if it is refused. It can take a week or so though. Take a look at this FAQ for more tips on getting LO to take a bottle. Breastfed babies and bottles

Thank you for both prompt replies and useful hyperlinks, I will keep trying feeding bottle once a day for a while, and if he doesn’t take it after couple mins, I will just feed him with breast keep him not dehydrated.

Talking about compensation, it’s hard to tell that day as it was late, normally after 6:30pm, I feed him on demand, everytime he cries, I offer, it’s up to him if he wants it or not. But one thing I am sure is we get wet diapers after, which is the good sign.

Thank again everyone, appreciate your response.
