How I FINALLY got my BFed baby to take a bottle!
« on: February 10, 2015, 02:02:12 am »
So I thought I would share this because I feel like I just got my life back! I am not sure if I read this on here or somewhere else at one point or if someone had recommended it to me or if I just made this up in my head, but after weeks of struggling my 15 week old daughter has finally taken to the bottle and enjoys both me nursing her and taking the bottle with pumped milk now. We tried many different kinds of nipples as people suggested, I left the house and let my husband try to feed her, and many other things to try and get her to take the bottle. It just didn't work. So if you are one of those moms that is like me with a 3 month old, needing to go back to work, but your baby just won't take anything but the boob, try this. About 2 weeks ago I started introducing different nipples to my baby during play time. She eventually found one type that she liked to play with, almost like a pacifier. Then I started using those nipples with the bottle it came with and just a 1/2 ounce of milk. Come to find out, she hated the bottle the nipple came with (Playtex semi-upright) but my husband figured out that the nipples also fit in the Advent bottles. So we tried the playtex slow release nipple in the advent 4 ounce bottles... and she liked it. I started introducing the bottle with just a 1/2 ounce in it at the beginning of every feeding. If she started to fuss or wasn't interested, I didn't push it on her. I just sat the bottle down and started nursing. Then after 2 days or so, she started to drink the 1/2 ounce. When she finished I would praise her and then start to nurse. The next day I went to 1 ounce and did the same thing. When she started finishing 1 ounce I then started putting 2 ounces. Once she took 2 ounces it was GAME ON! She now loves the bottle. I feel like I have a little more of my life back. I got to run errands today and not have to hurry back for the next feeding because my husband was able to give a bottle. IT. WAS. WONDERFUL!!! So I thought I would share this in case anyone else has been struggling with this recently and is having the feelings I was having of just helplessness and questioning my decision to breastfeed. ((Now if my daughter would just take her naps hahaha)

I know the feeling of relief with this one. Breast to bottle is a huge challenge.
