Cooking with breast milk - recipes please!
« on: April 14, 2015, 16:59:52 pm »
Not sure if this should be on the cooking board but..
Can anyone share some recipes which use a lot of breast milk? My freezer is full and there is no milk bank in the state I reside in, and we will not be travelling to one that has one any time soon.

Just moved you over to the recipes board.

Rice pudding? Porridge fingers?  Milk pudding (like blancmange)?

Is there a hospital that might take if off your hands??

Thanks, creations. I'm doing porridge, bread pudding, pancakes and French toast. I need some recipes that will use up a lot. Found one for cheese yesterday- just need to get my hands on rennet tablets. The hospitals here are not interested, sadly. How would the milk pudding be made?

I just made with milk, some corn flour to thicken and some vanilla essence for flavour, heat and stir to thicken then pour into bowls to set.  It is supposed to be made with sugar of course but the only time I made it DS was young so no sugar.

There are all sorts of recipes for chocolate or fruit flavours if you google. It's very simple.

Custard?
Sorry can't think of anything which uses lots. Cheese sounds adventurous!

Cheese sauce for pasta, califlower cheese or a kind of potato gratin.
Porridge bites. Not much milk but makes finger food.
Scrambled egg, fritatta or omelette
Bread and Butter pudding.
Flap jacks use milk don't they?
If you would give her jelly you can make a kind of blancmange with jelly cubes and milk. Not sure about the sugar/sweeteners though.
Anything you use milk in really.
Are you still pumping?  If so you could freeze what you pump and use the freezer stash if she takes a bottle or cup so that you get longer to use it up (6m from when you freeze it).

Have you considered Eats on Feets who connect local mamas requiring breast milk for their babies with ladies like yourself who wish to donate? http://www.eatsonfeets.org/

Thanks for the ideas, Ali. Yep, I've pretty much been using it on any recipe that calls for milk.

The good news is that I was able to donate 510 oz last week. A friend carried it for me to the place where the milk bank is. Really happy about this.

Cheese sauce is an interesting idea though. Have you tried out with breast milk?

Thank you:) It's the only reason I continue pumping as Eris very rarely needs a bottle. So far I've managed to donate around a 1000oz and hoping to contribute more before I stop nursing

Wow!

Yes I've done cheese sauce with breast milk when I was nursing my oldest as I had a small freezer stock and he didn't take a bottle. I just melted butter, added plain flour and then breast milk until it was the right consistency. Then I grated in cheddar cheese. Sometimes I also added mustard powder as it makes it taste more cheesey. I don't measure quantities I just go by how it looks.

I just saw this thread is a few weeks old so not sure why it suddenly popped up in my updated posts since last visit list ???

I think you were here for the fish bites thread Ali, and then saw this one on the board.

That's really amazing. It's such a generous thing to do. I really admire you.
