Already OT :(
« on: August 04, 2015, 16:35:07 pm »
I think my poor little one is already OT at only 3 weeks. He had a rough start to life with a severe tongue tie that was revised incorrectly and had to be done again. So, for the first two weeks of his life he was nursing constantly just to maintain, and slowly gain weight.

Once that was taken care of, he had a few good days, but his A times were longer than they should have been at almost 90 minutes. I would start putting him down for nap at 30-45 minutes and he just wouldn't go to sleep until almost exactly 90 minutes. Then his naps started falling apart and now he is having days where he can't settle and sleep after 1 or 2pm and he gets little 10-15 min "naps" until he finally screams himself to sleep (in my arms) out of exhaustion at 9 or 10pm.

Now I don't know what to do to help him come back from being OT while still implementing a, EAS routine. When he finally sleeps, do I just leave him asleep as long as he wants or do I wake him if the nap reaches 3 hours? Should I make his A times super short or still try for 45-60 minutes?

Another problem is that he was essentially nursing to sleep for 2 weeks because the nursing was constant. I'm not sure how to transition to going to sleep without a boob in his mouth.

You would think that after 3 kids on the baby whisperer schedule I would know how everything works.....but apparently not lol.

Welcome to the forums, congratulations on your new LO and (((hugs))) for the rough start! Tbh I'd try not to worry too much about props at this stage, I was so strict with DS and then DD had most of her naps in the sling until about 3/4mo, by which time she was getting some self settling skills and I don't think the sling harmed her ability to self settle at all in the long run. What it did mean was that she got far better sleep in the early weeks than DS, who seemed to be constantly OT. So really, don't feel you have to do anything with him right now other than get bf established, especially in the light of the rough start. Were you told to feed him every 2-3h around the clock for the first couple of weeks or so after the tongue tie division? That's the advice we were given when DD was 3mo, as you don't want it to heal back to how it was before. So I'm afraid at the moment you will have to wake him so that he doesn't go longer than that between feeds, until that risk reduces - I'm assuming you've had advice on that? Hope you have lots of help on hand?? You need your rest too! (((Hugs)))

I don't have any BTDT experience with tongue tie but I agree with PP, just let your baby get the feeding firmly under control and everything else will slowly come together.  With DS2 I had to feed him every 3 hrs, regardless of whether he was sleeping because he had poor weight gain so that's something for you to consider.  If the poor sleeping is happening in the afternoon, pop him into a baby carrier.  That would give him the closeness he's likely craving (as you do when you're teeny), probably help him sleep longer and free up your arms!  With regards to feeding to sleep, don't sweat it.  You can start really adhering to EASY once he's a little older and you have the other issues resolved. Until then, just do your best.
