2 month old - hates the car
« on: November 21, 2015, 18:29:39 pm »
Any tips?

We are driving to my mom's for Thanksgiving and I'm dreading it.  It's 2 hrs with no traffic - could easily take 3 or 4 with holiday traffic.  J used to fuss just when the car stopped at stop lights but would eventually drift to sleep.  Now, she just cries the whole time.  I hate to think of her screaming til she finally passes out back there which is what I'm anticipating...

Ds was the same and actually there just wasn't that much we could do about it.  We did try to time journeys to coincide with naps but it didn't help that much - we just had to wait for him to grow out of it which he did relatively quickly. The one thing that did sometimes make a difference was playing Guns 'n' Roses... :D

DD2 was the same. Turns out she hated the infant car seat. Switched her to a regular car seat (reclined and rear facing of course) and she stopped crying so much.

Actually that's a point - does she have reflux? I think the infant seats can be quite uncomfortable for refluxers because of the angle of their tummies - certainly ds was a refluxer.  Not sure what you can do about it though...

Mine all hated the car as well.  Can you sit back there next to her?  At least you'd be able to be within eyesight while she was crying.  :(
Even if they cried continuously, I always found it better to be next to them where I could snuggle, replace paci, etc.  Could you leave right after you feed her with the hopes that she'll fall asleep quicker?

DD3 hated her seat until she was 2 years old unfortunately...when she finally clued in that going for a drive meant you ended up somehwere different and fun. The first long trip I did solo so no option for anyone but DD1 to sit by her. Stopped to feed/burp etc and finally gave up and drove as fast as I dared to get home. We have a DVD player and used it since she was very tiny to play babaly einstein, helped some but not the whole drive.

Maybe you can borrow and try a different seat? Any chance you can sit with her? DH driving?

Thanks for all the ideas, ladies.

Can you have big sister sit next to her and amuse her a bit?
She tries!  Such a caring big sis.  But doesn't help at this point..

J does have reflux and I suspect this is some of it bc she often spits up in the car seat.  We do have another car seat actually (hand-me-down) so I may try that one and see how she does.

Unfortunately, I can't fit in the back seat with both kiddos.  At the very least, I can lean into the back since DH will be driving and replug the paci or pat her...
She doesn't seem to mind the carseat hooked into the  stroller as much, so my best bet may be to try to get her to drift off in the stroller and transfer her to the car.  Then speed all the way there!  :P

I used to literally start the car up then rock DS in his seat until asleep then zoom away x
