9 month short naps
« on: February 09, 2016, 07:25:16 am »
Hi

My lo is 9 months (adjusted age- 10 weeks premature) and she has always suffered with short naps. She generally wakes between 25 and 35 minutes. I have tried shush pat for months now and this often works and she will go back to sleep for another 30-40 mins but she can't seem to do it without me. She self settles when going to sleep for naps and in the evening. A typical day looks like this

Wake 7.00 / breastfeed
Breakfast 8.30
Nap 1 9.50-10.20
Lunch 12.20
Nap 2 13.20-14.40 (woke twice and settled by shush pat)
Snack 3.00
Dinner 5.00
Bath 17.45
Sleep 18.15

Any advice on how to encourage her to nap longer without shush pat from me

Thanks

Hi there,
so she is on 3h A times? It sounds like she is ready for more and that would hopefully will increase the length of the nap. When you increase A times it's better to increase it slowly, so 10-15min every 3 days and stop when you see the naps are ok. Of course every baby is different and some need more than 3 days, some need smaller jumps than 10min and of course don't push it to be 5h A time or something!
I also wouldn't do Shush-pat anymore, at this age they often find it more stimulating than calming. Have you considered using PU/PD?

You are not alone, my DS is the same age and has short napped for ages.  I cannot resettle but do leave every time and sometimes he does go back on his own, if I go in there is no chance. Quite often if hasn't gone back and I go in he will have pooed!  I also got advice to extend awake times so hope it works for you.  We are in the process (just) and still a bit hit and miss but at least not as long a stretch to bedtime.
