11 month old EW - help!
« on: March 07, 2016, 09:31:02 am »
 ???

I have two daughters - one aged 3 and one who is 1 this month. Both have been on EASY since 3 months old. My first is an amazing sleeper and completely textbook.

My second - Juliet - is more spirited. She's never been a great napper in the day - especially the afternoons, though she has a relatively good morning sleep now - normally an hour - 1:15.

Our issue is that no matter what we have done she cannot seem to get past 5-5:15am then she is up and ready for the day.

Bedtime routine is exactly the same as Sophie - 6;15 bath, 6:30 pj's and book, 6:45 milk and then down to sleep.

She normally goes down well, sometimes fights and we have to do pu/pd until she settles.

The only difference from Sophie is that she was in our room until about a month ago because we only have 2 bedrooms and we didn't want to disturb Sophie who sleeps so well 7-7. We try to resettle Juliet when she wakes but she just gets up and cries again and then eventually wakes Sophie so we have ended up bringing her in with us just to not wake Sophie up. She very very rarely goes back to sleep - we've tried a bottle and feel like we've tried everything! We're exhausted!

Her routine is:

5-5:30 wake (frequently wakes in night too)
6am - breakfast
9-9:30 - milk and nap (3x a week I can't get her down before this as DD1 goes to preschool drop off 9:15)
10:30 ish wake and snack
11:30-12 lunch
Between 1-2 - milk (never takes much and has started to refuse this a lot) nap - frequently in pushchair, varies massively. Average 40 mins.
3 ish - snack
4:30/5- dinner
6:15 bath
6:45 milk and bed

Please - any suggestions??

Sorry Honey that you haven't received any responds yet. I have limited time today but can you go to sleep FAQ and look for a thread about first signs of 2:1 transition? Early waking, short napping and nap refusal so usual signs for thinking (not yet doing!) a transition to one nap. Happy to answer your question when you go through the link!

For us a EW always indicated that dd needed an A push (always at a nap transition time) which is difficult to do when they are awake from so early on. M
Can you try and push that first nap a little later, mabee 10, and then the second one then a little later and keep the second one short still. It may cause OT to start with due to pushing the A time for that first nap but once settled into it, could possibly then help that EW!

Thanks both!
4:20 am this morning  :o

So I've read the 2:1 transition boards too - so the suggestion is to push her first nap a little later and then her afternoon nap short?

She is definitely still tired when she gets up - rubbing eyes, yawning etc. But just won't go back to sleep. Yesterday she fell asleep at 9:30 in the pushchair on the way back from the school run which she never does!

You can either push or cap or push the first nap.

Ok, I'll let you know how I get on! Thank you!

So....I know it's only been a few days but here's an update.

I aimed to push the morning nap but Thursday and Friday she had a 4:20am wake up time :-/ so fell asleep in the pushchair on the way to pre school which she has never done!! So 9am! But she's only slept 30-40 minutes so I brought lunch forward and got her to nap at 12:30 for an hour (though today she refused a pm nap altogether!!).

I've then had to put her to bed at 5:30pm as she's been so tired. Plus side is she slept until 5:10 so almost a 12 hour cycle...so I'm now thinking her EW is due to over tiredness as she doesn't nap well in the day???

So what would you suggest? Early bedtime early waking and then start to push it back by 15mins like in the thread? I'm not sure I'll be able to push her am nap back at the moment whilst she's waking between 4 and 5 am???

I would try to work towards routine you had with short mornings, but 12:30 seems to be a bit early after 40min in the morning so you could do a afternoon nap a bit later so it's longer and you have better nap and shorter A till BT? Wdyt?

The routine of 6:45 BT? She's definitely OT and ready for bed at 5:30pm like we've done for the last few nights. She normally really fights BT but putting her down at 5:30 she has gone straight to slee without argument. She's never been a particularly good day napper.

So if she's waking at 5/5:30 what time would you suggest for AM and PM naps?

Thank you so much for all your help so far!! I appreciate it so much x

Would it work if I got the routine to work 5:30-5:39 with a short nap around 10am and a longer one 1/1:30pm ish (or later??) and once this is working I could start to shift the whole 12 hour cycle back again by 15 min increments until it's a 6:30-6:30 or similar?

Yes definitelly, but with 10min and 5am WU I wouldn't really go for a nap later than 12:45/13:00.

Ok thanks! But ultimately I want to make the WU later than 5am - that's my ultimate goal! 😝
