four month old suddenly fighting naps? shush pat or pu/pd

my fourth month old was always good at settling himself... occasional. giving out or crying but we'd always go in and reassure him.Recently this has been getting harder and harder until today when he is going in made he cry harder and harder!
I tried shush pat down and it worked like a dream the first time .. when he woke up from the nap after
30 mins I tried to us it again for ten mins but he just cried harder and harder !is he too old for this method ? should I try pu/  pd instead . Really upset coz up until smooth ago he only nappies in a moving buggy so we had made do much progress . He had been taking long naps in his crib... and I'd even done the sleep to wake strategy with him to extend naps
any advice

Hi Hun, I hope it gets better.

Could you please give us an idea of his EAS? 

Is something bothering him, gas, teeth? 

Shush/ pat doesn't always work for us and from memory we had about 4 weeks of very little napping when my baby was around 4 months. 

Lets see what we can do to help!
