Nap help!
« on: August 09, 2016, 16:21:34 pm »
At what age should I drop the 2nd nap?
Hubby and I are in a bit of disagreement...

We had a family gathering the other day and it cut into her afternoon nap, and she refused to nap there since there was so much going on.  However, she was up and happy until bedtime at 7:30.

My husband thinks this is a sign we should drop this second nap (it is fairly late in the day, and a pain, I agree).

Her schedule is as follows:
Wakes 7-7:30
8 oz bottle at 7:30
Solids at 9-9:30
Nap 11-12:30 or 1
Playgroup (2 days per week) at 12:45 or 1
Solids at 1:00-1:30
8 oz bottle at 3:00pm
Nap 4:00-5:30 pm
Solids at 5:30
8 oz bottle at 7pm
Bath
Bed between 7:30-7:45

I'm hesitant on getting rid of her last nap...just looking for opinions.
Thanks!

How old is she?

Here's some info in the 2-1 which includes signs of readiness to start the transition (there is no set age you "should" do this, like a lot of things it comes down to when your baby is ready) but general advice is to hang on to the 2nd nap as long as you can to avoid getting into an overtired mess! Older babies can sometimes cope with a one off 1 nap day but continuing it before they're ready can get them really tired and grumpy!

From 2 to 1 nap transition (10-12m and older)

I really didn't want to cut down to one nap because, I'm assuming, it will push her 11am nap later?  Right now we have playgroup 2 days a week at 12:45 and we both love it...I don't want to eliminate that with all her friends she made.

I think a well rested baby who normally has 2 naps can cope with the occasional one nap day when it's an out of routine special event, like your family party. It's just if it was everyday it might cause problems if she's not ready.

It sounds like she's in a routine which suits her and you right now? As the saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"  :)
