4.5 month old; developmental or 3:2 transition time?
« on: January 09, 2017, 19:21:17 pm »
Hi everyone.

Our DD2 has suddenly gone back to short naps again. :( And Shh/Pat doesn't work as well anymore!

For the past few days she has been fighting her catnaps. It's taking Shh/pat longer to get her back to sleep. Also, she's trying to flip and sit up. She's been successful at flipping from tummy to side and back to tummy again. Finally, she's been happy with awake times 2:00-2;15 recently.

I guess my question is:
Short naps/fighting catnaps because it's time to transition to 2 naps/extend A times?? Or is this developmental? (Eg, flipping, Leap #4) and just keep on course with 2naps+catnap?  She's exclusively breastfed.

Thanks in advance,
V.

Hi there's a sleep regression at 4 months which can be quite disruptive. Your A times seem ok, already slightly on the higher side so I would say it's most likely developmental but you could try a very small A increase to see if it helps.
It's quite common when in a leap babies need a longer A and then when it's over they revert back.

Thanks for your reply, lolsyb1982.

You are right; whatever it was it was  developmental. She is back napping well during the day after a few days off. Night time sleep is good (8 or so hours before she wakes for night time feeding) so I'm not complaining.

Thanks again.

Hi everyone. Just an update:

DD2 regressed again :(. She started waking up every 30-40mins during naps and fought the catnap. Her night sleep was also affected (waking up every 4-4.5 hours). Decided to give her longer A times (Inwas capping it at around 2:00) as lolsyb1982 suggested and it worked. Her A times are now 2:15-2:20's for all cycles. She did not fight the extended A times and is napping well and STTN. I guess her 3:2 transition started a bit early! She moved to 4 hour EASY early as well (at 3 months). I guess every baby is different and watching for cues is key.

Thanks again, lolsyb1982!
