Night waking started again - help!
« on: July 08, 2017, 22:45:10 pm »
Hi there

My 15mo son started waking in the night a couple of weeks ago.  He has/had been teething and got two teeth pretty much straight after the other.

He has been fussing with his upper gums a little (the other teeth were on the bottom) so I thought "here we go again, another tooth coming through at the top".

Although I can't see much happening there, just a little bit of a tooth somewhere around there, maybe moving around.

Anyway he has been waking at random times ever since he started teething again.  Sometimes 5 am, 4 am, last night it was 11.30 pm, sometimes 2 am.  So I don't feel like its habit waking.

The one thing with this kid is, even though I am not really that into doing it because for my eldest child and mostly for this one I have never been keen on "feed to sleep" - he need a bottle before he goes back to sleep.  I can go in there, give pain relief, leave him for 10 minutes or so but he won't go back to sleep until he's had that bottle.  (He's a large baby and is a very hungry kid during the day).

I really want to stop this before it becomes a habit.  Although in previous teething times he has had a bottle and then when teething is over he just goes back to STTN.

Any ideas on what I should/could do?  I'll hopefully be sure he isn't waking for teeth but in the meantime unless we give a bottle he can sometimes be awake for an hour or so.

BTW we don't really give bottles anymore during the day - he has some milk along with his breakfast and dinner and that's it.

Many thanks in advance.  EASY is below for reference.

EASY
6 am WU
7 am breakfast and milk
10 am snack
11.30 am lunch
12 pm nap until 2 pm
3 pm snack
5 pm dinner and milk
6.15 pm lights out, asleep by 6.30/6.45 pm.

Hi there I'd prob say if you can feel a bit of tooth they maybe are bothering him! Could you try meds and a drink of water rather than a bottle?

bedtime might do with a little 15 min push x

Not sure why I didn't see this sorry Haribo!  I had this post set up for Notify.  Anyway.

Yeah he's wise to water or reduced amounts unfortunately.

I was thinking before actually maybe his afternoon sleep is too early.  I dunno?!  Its annoying. He is kind of awake in the night, maybe that's part of it!!?

Thanks Zoe

Have pushed BT out to more like 6.30pm down and 6.50pm is asleep.

Still finding he is waking in the night.  I'm wondering if UT.  He is chatty and he groans but stops if you go in there, and wants to play.

Is his nap too long do you think?  He still does this if he for some reason has a shorter nap (which is every few days).  But usually afternoon nap is around 2-2.5 hours.  If very tired (and this is maybe once every 7-10 days) does 3 hours.  Have pushed his afternoon nap to 12.15 pm.  Should I be capping his nap at say 2 hours?

Any ideas if this sounds like UT as both his cold and teething seem to have gone.

Thanks!!

Hi
Sounds UT to me but I'd prob leave nap around 2 hours and push BT by 15 mins.

Thank you.  Have pushed BT out by 15 mins about a week ago... sorry just reread post and yes i realise it seems like I haven't!  Original BT was 6.15 now 6.30, would you still push out another 15?

And cap nap at 2 hours if he sleeps 2+?

I'd prob let nap go up to 2.5 hours and aim to get BT 7/7.15pm with a 6am WU. So I'd shift bt by another 15 mins x

Ok will give it a go 6.45pm for a start.  Our 3year old has always done 6.30/6.45pm > 6am so hopefully they can stay in sync 😱😱😱

Thanks!!
