Just started solids, how often poop?
« on: January 08, 2018, 10:00:27 am »
We started solids, about 2 weeks ago now. She’s not eating significant amounts. I’d say maybe 1-2 teaspoons 2 a day.
Previously she was ebf and only pooped about once a week. Now that she’s on solids should the frequency increase or should I not worry yet as she isn’t ingesting enough to be pooping more?
She’s eating avocado mostly, gnawing on apple a bit, tried zucchini yesterday. I’ve stopped with banana and carrots just in case.
Last poop was 3 days ago. Should I go in with pears, peas and prunes? Can’t remember what is normal at this stage 🤣

I couldn't post yesterday due to a glitch in the system.
Glad to hear via PM that you feel reasonably reassured that there isn't anything to worry about just yet if poos are normal.
Come back if you have any concerns or questions though.

I think she may be a bit constipated. Passing squishy balls a few times a day and straining. I’ve put her on prunes peas and pears with some meats, it’s been 3 days though and no change. Any other  ideas?
I gave her a jar where there was mostly carrots just to see how she goes, big mistake grrr.

My son was constipated too even though we him lots of whole grains and fiber. GP said to give the Ps. It took 3-4 weeks before the balls turned to mush finally. Hopefully your LO will get some relief soon. Mine used to cry every bowel movement :(

Did you just give the Ps for a few weeks?
We have been doing only prunes, pears and peas for a few days but I’ve started giving other things too, I mean how long can you eat only 3 things?
Was thing ostmeAl with prunes for a change or bits of egg and avocado. Those should be ok, right? I give water and water from boiled prunes too.
A few weeks to get things going, ok will be patient.

I hope it wont take that long for you, it's awful seeing them suffer. I was giving other food too but minimizing those that are low or have no fiber - white bread, potatoes (only sweet potatoes), meats, etc. I gave lots of fruits and vegetables but yeah, still took about 4 weeks before more than half of his BM was soft or mushy. I even had to give suppository few times to help him.

Ok thanks. Its not bad enough for her to Cry but she definitely has to strain.
Will avoid stuff that blocks her up.
What about natural yogurt?

I'd like to add that it is not advised in the UK to give whole grains to babies (I'd need to look up the age as I am full of cold so the exact info escapes me but I think it's at least not until 12 months if not older), it is too hard to digest, can make them feel too full and therefore could impact on their milk/fluid intake, reducing milk intake of course is not wanted before 12 months and reducing fluids/water can make the constipation worse.  Of course different countries have different guides so you could check in your own country for advice on whole grains for babies.

I found prunes (the soft ready to eat sort) work fine for managing my DS's poos.  I did try the canned (no added sugar but of course full of fruit sugars) variety once but this made his SO loose that I decided I better not try that again.  If your LO is bad though the canned variety might be worth a go.

If LO is constipated for more than a few days though I would visit your GP as it is not good to have an on going problem and some medication might be needed to get past this problem and back to normal again.  When you do get back to normal I'd be very cautious of carrots - they also blocked my DS up but I was able to manage it with prunes once I knew.

Would you consider oatmeal a whole grain?
Not sure how constipated she is exactly... she was pooping mush previously but now it’s more like balls stuck together - not hard though. Or she just passes a smallish round poop, not mush any more. Would you consider that constipated? Think I will take her in to the dr in case but not sure what to tell him or how normal her movements are.
Am trying really hard not to be one of those moms who takes pictures of poop lol

Here's a link to the Scoop on Poop FAQ which might help, scroll down to get past the new born poop post:
https://babywhispererforums.com/index.php?topic=157413.0

Oats are whole grain but I can't say I know why they tend to be more acceptable for babies than for instance wholegrain pasta or brown rice, perhaps because the grain has been processed/rolled - sorry I can't expand on that.  There is no harm in holding off from oats/grains for a little while yet though as your LO is only 6 months, you might find it more suitable to stick to veggies and some fruits for now and re-introduce grains in a month or 2.
Very small amounts of whole grains are usually okay unless LO reacts negatively (ie too full for other foods or milk) for instance we always had shop bought whole grain sliced bread and I didn't switch to white bread for DS as it was too much of a hassle to buy another loaf for the small amount I would give him, say a quarter slice and not every day, but I used white pasta and any other baked/bready things were white (pitta bread, bread rolls, naan, scone, pancake etc).

It's very hard to advise on poo - it is expected to change when they start solids,  LOs are expected to put a lot of effort into it because they have to learn to use their muscles to push, but constipation needs to be avoided.  My DS had some constipation meds for a short time, the doc actually gave me a huge bottle and told me to use it daily on-going but after a little while I saw the health visitor who advised me to stop because she said babies on meds for long periods do not learn to push properly which can cause problems too.

Another thing I have always felt is that offering only one food at a time can cause more problems than it avoids. For instance if I had done the 3 day thing with carrots for my DS he would have been totally constipated, but offering a wider variety of foods and not the same/single food every day meant he had more chance of the foods balancing each other out - and that goes for foods which made poo too soft as well as foods which made it too hard.  Some foods effected his reflux rather than his poo, eg pears but he could have grated pear made into little pancakes and was fine.  The general advice these days is that you don't need to trial each food on it's own unless there is known allergies in the family or LO shows allergy/intolerance in which case you'd need to reduce the variety so you could more easily identify the problem food.

Sorry I don't have a straight cut answer for you.  If ever in doubt it's best to speak to a health professional.

So baby whisperer magic strikes again! She definitely passed everything that was stuck. Thanks for the poop pictures, they cleared things up, it was constipation for sure.
We mostly do blw so she eats what we eat but without salt. A bit of spoon feeding lately for practice as my mom refuses blw and will babysit son

So baby whisperer magic strikes again!
Yay!! :)

Glad to hear things are on the move.

As you are doing BLW here's a tip - if you do like to eat brown pasta yourself it isn't too much of a drag to add some white pasta into the pan at the same time and pick it out for LO when you drain the pasta (if you use a different shape for the white pasta it's easier to see and pick out).  I didn't make a mix of brown and white pasta but we did have a bit of a phase of cooking a different shape pasta sometimes for DS, in the same pan, just because it was easier for him to pick up and through his phase of refusing spaghetti because he couldn't get it in his mouth fast enough.  Can't do it with brown/white rice though lol.
