7mth old suddenly waking at 5am last 5nights
« on: January 14, 2018, 22:44:40 pm »
Hi

My 7mth old has suddenly started to wake at 5am each morning. Prior to this he went down between 730-8pm & slept through until 8-9am.
Nothing has changed in his routine or with his food. He always slept little during the day. Normally sleeps for 45min mid morning & late afternoon. When he wakes from
His naps he is not sleepy & is in great form.
His typical day

8am -wakes & drinks 3-4oz btl & naps for 1hr
930am - breakfast & bottle
11am - nap 45min
130pm- dinner & btl
330pm- 45min nap
530pm - tea
730pm- bed & btl ( tends to only drink 2-3oz )

The time in between naps , feeding etc he is playing or out for walks etc.

When he wakes at 5am if I give him a small 4oz btl he will go back to sleep. I have also tried nursing him with no btl & he has also gone back to sleep with a little more difficulty.

I am a little confused what to do ?

Can you help ?

Is he teething? We had our first teeth at 7 months at sleep was definitely disrupted.

Also might be worth tweaking his morning A time, see if he's working on shifting to 2 naps instead of 3. Those are short nap lengths; you might get better day sleep - and more restful night sleep - with more restorative sleep/longer naps. Maybe see what happens if you treat that 8AM waking as him waking for the day, then a morning nap closer to 10:30 if he'll last that long - might be worth taking a few days and seeing if he's ready for that shift and if so how best to accommodate it.

Yes he is teething. It doesnít seem to be bothering him too much as in he is in good form & I havnt had to use any meds.
Will try the morning wake as his day start.
Thanks for the reply 😉

Should I continue giving him btl at 5am until new routine takes over ?

Whoops, sorry I missed this!

Does he take a pacifier/soother/dummy? If so, will he accept that in place of the 5AM feed?

If he's still looking to feed then, I'd go ahead and do it for now, maybe not switch up TOO many things at once, but also try to increase daytime calories, see if he'll get to a place where he doesn't need that extra feed when he should be sleeping. What's his activity level like when he's awake? Getting lots of tummy time? That burns up calories like crazy, but so SO good for neuromuscular development!

Hi

I tried starting his day when he initially wakes & as you predicted he looked for a nap by 10/1030am. He is sleeping for 1-1/2hrs. His nap in the afternoon tends to still be 45min long although it can sometimes be 1hr. He is very active all day long. Between walker, high chair , mat time , out walking etc.

However I thought I was getting there with your tips & now he has started to roll around the cot ALL night long getting stuck in the corners of the cot or wanting to sleep face down & gets upset then when he canít get himself out of position he is in. When I go up to help him he is very much asleep but by the time I get back to bed he is face down or rolled over into a corner again. I feel this is teething related although he is not suffering with his teeth all day long & I donít need to medicate him. He currently has 6 teeth with only 2fully down.

Any ideas on whatís going on & how to handle it. Mammy is chronically sleep deprived at this stage😢

The rolling may be developmental. Is he also rolling during the day? Is it a recent skill for him? If so, give lots of opportunities to practice it during the day to help him get to a point where the novelty wears off a little quicker. :) This too shall pass.

Good luck!

Yes he gets lots of mat time & is very confident rolling around on both sides. Just stated to attempt crawling too.
Glad to hear it will pass 😱 face down sleeping is a bit scary

Thanks for the reply 👍
