Weaning 5MO off dummy
« on: December 11, 2018, 10:36:00 am »
Hi there
We decided to take dummy off our 5MO for sleeping as he was waking frequently at night for it. We are using ssh pat to help transition to self settling. How long do we persist with this. We are on day 5. It's only taking a few minutes of ssh patting for him to settle and drift off. I've tried reducing patting but he can start crying again. We used to be able to put him down awake with dummy and he would put himself to sleep. im just wondering how long we persist with ssh pat as he cries being placed in cot now. I don't want him to pick up another bad habit

It sounds like you're doing great! No one can say how long it will take before he doesn't need the SH pat anymore but if you're putting him down at the right times, he will wean off it at some stage.

The other possibility is that it could be a mantra cry? He may be using it to soothe himself. They don't always sound soothing
