Rolling Over and waking up MANY times
« on: August 04, 2005, 15:04:55 pm »
Hello All

I feel like I have a newborn - my son is 6 1/2 months old.

He is a tummy sleeper and has learnt to roll over to his back more than a month ago. Since then, I have been getting up and flipping him back onto his tummy whenever he does so. Last night I got up 13 times.

I can't do it anymore!

The thing is, he does'nt even try to roll the other way. He just screams. He sits up really well and is a strong boy - he should definitly be able to do it!

When he was about 4 months old I shht-pat him. Now he seems to get angrier whenever he sees me in his room. I don't know if I should do pu/pd, as it is not sleep that is the problem, is the rolling over thing. As soon as I flip him over - he goes back to sleep immediatly.

I have been told that this would soon pass, and that he will learn to roll over the other way. Well, it's been more than a month and he is still not even attempting.

Any suggestions (before I go mad!)

Yvette

hey there. this was a nightmare for us too until i decided that if i kept flicking her back, she would never learn to sleep in her new position, and that was what she had to do (she was a back sleeper who freaked out on her tummy). so i stopped flipping her, and just stayed with her with my hand on her back when she`d rolled over, and shh`d a little and reassured her and just kept my hand on her. i was amazed at how quickly she learnt it was ok to sleep in her new position...it only took a few times of doing this and one day i went in and she was asleep happily on her tummy and she now PREFERS to sleep like that. mind you, the first time was really hard, hearing her cry because she coupldn`t understand what was happening. she cried for about 20 minutes, (and i cried too!!) but i just stayed with her reassuring her and with my hand on her.
Our beautiful baby girl is....

We have all been there and understand your frustration.

Cazao has given you excellent advice, I wish i had thought of that.

Also: Developmental blips like this are expected. After rolling in the sleep, next it'll be sitting up.. then pulling up to stand.. fun fun fun!

During the day, give your little one tons of opportunities to play on his back.

hi, I also have a tummy sleeper who keeps rolling onto his back but cannot roll from back to tummy. He usually wakes crying for me to flip him back and sometimes I even end up feeding him to get him back to sleep. The other night though when I went in to check him he was asleep on his back so I am just hoping he will gradually get used to sleeping on his back. He has not done this again since but it has given me hope that in time things will get better. x
