How old is too old to swaddle?
« on: August 19, 2005, 01:48:56 am »
Hello Everyone,
My ds is (already) 15 weeks, and he LOVES to be swaddled.  He smiles when I swaddle him, everytime.  I thought I read somewhere that swaddling can or should stop at about 3 months old.  Is this correct?  He's just so happy and sleeps so great, that I hate to interrupt a good thing.  We have recently swaddled him with one arm out as he's really into sucking his hands.  He's getting so long though, and he's getting SOOOO wiggly, that it's hard to swaddle him.  First of all, is it harming him developmentally if I continue to swaddle him, and also, what do other Mommy's swaddle their dc in if they're getting bigger?

Thanks so much!
Stephanie

I swaddled Tyler in an Aussie swaddle using a bedsheet folded in half until he was 8 mo or so. I only stopped then because he was figuring out how to get his paci in by himself and I wanted him to be able to do it at night. At that point, I just wrapped his legs in a smaller blanket, and I still do for naptime to this day (he's almost 20 mo old). We never swaddled him at night, though...he just got too hot.

It's debatable whether or not there's any developmental "harm" in swaddling. Personally, I think that most of their developmental learning takes place when they're awake, but that's just my guess. Tyler did roll over late, crawl late, and walk late, but he talked early. I doubt it was related to swaddling, I think that's just the way he was. It all evens out in the end, IMHO!

I have just started getting rid of the swaddle for our ds, but he LOVED it up till now.  And he's a very active boy, rolling over at 4 months, and already trying to crawl (so far he's going backwards a little bit - but not "real" crawling  :D ).  I don't think it stops their development at all - it's not like you keep him wrapped up in a swaddle 24 / 7!

I just recently discontinued the swaddling at night, because he wasn't staying in it anyway, so we switched to footie pajamas instead.  But I still swaddle him at his naps, but just his body and feet, his arms are both out.

I did start leaving one arm out around 4 months, because he likes to suck his thumb.

I say keep swaddling until you think he doesn't want it anymore, or until he gets out of it so much that he's not really swaddled anymore.

HTH!
