Nights getting worse??!!
« on: August 28, 2005, 14:05:36 pm »
Can anyone offer help/advice for my situation??

My daughter is 3 1/2 mos old - she's on the EASY routine - eating about every 3 hrs during the day.  By 1 month, she was only waking once/night (after a 10:00 DF), & going right back to sleep.  Then at 11 weeks, she slept thru the night for a week straight.  She got an ear infection & started waking up in the night at 12 weeks.  She could be soothed back to sleep by my husband without needing to eat (we really didn't think she was hungry).  After the ear infection cleared, she woke up once/night for a couple nights, but only cried a minute & got herself back to sleep.  Now, she's waking 2 times/night & cries, but won't get herself back to sleep.

I'm confused - she doesn't go to sleep with a pacifier, no props are used (she's swaddled & put down drowsy, but awake, & sucks on her thumb/fingers).  She falls asleep just fine with soothing herself.  Why would she not be able to do this in the night now, when she has before??

Thanks for any help anyone has to give - I appreciate it!!!

Hi there,

Sorry to hear you're having a rough time - it always seems like it's one step forward and two steps back with babies, doesn't it?!

If you post your schedule (naps, feedings, etc.) it may give us a better idea of what's going on.

Well, she tends to get up around 7:00 & eat - putting her eating times around 10, 1, 4, 7 & 10 (DF) for the rest of the day.  There of course is some variance in this - sometimes going 3 1/2 hours, sometimes 2 1/2 hours.  She is usually awake about 1 1/2 hours (including eating time) & then has a nap.  The naps range from 30 minutes to 2 hrs - typically 2 longer naps & 2 shorter ones.

Does this make sense?  Let me know if any questions/clarification needed...

Is she hungry when she is waking at night?

Nope, we don't think she's hungry.  When we go in, pick her up & pat/shh for a little bit & lay her down she'll go back to sleep.

Hang in there!

Hi Heather...the only thing I can think of is...she's 3 months old and that's just what they do!  LOL  Not really funny I know but we just went through an up and down month with Molly and now that she is just over 4 months we are enjoying some probably short-lived smooth sailing!
Her naps have increased from 45 minutes to 1.5-2 hours seemingly over night. She also feeds much better (up to 6 oz. per feed compared to the 3-4 she was taking previously) and goes down alot easier. She is still waking once in the night (every night at 4:30 am) but we are on night 2 of the recommended 3 night wake-to-sleep method.
Sorry I couldn't give you any suggestions for a quick-fix but just hang in there, it should turn around shortly! Sounds like you are doing awesome, just keep it up and try not to get into any accidental parenting!
