ounces of bm vs formula

Just curious...I've heard that a baby needs more ounces of formula a day than breastmilk...can anyone advise on this?  My son is on a nursing strike except for morning and bedtime so I've been pumping during the day and have been using the ebm in his cereal and fruit.  I seem to pump a bit less than the requirements for his age..however, I don't know how much he is getting at his two feeds.  Anyway, I'm digressing....does anyone know if the number of ounces is the same for formula and bf?

I have never heard of that before if anything formula is more filling than breastmilk as it gets digested slower so I do not think that is right.

Check out this website on EBM calculations.  Babies who are EBF will take on average 25 oz of EBM per day.  This is an average.  Generally the amount of EBM stays constant b/w 1-6months according to this website.

"There are various ways of estimating the amount of milk intake related to the weight of the baby and the age of the baby, based upon formula intake - research has shown that these methods overestimate the amount of milk that baby actually needs. These are the estimates that we used for breastfed babies for years, with the caveat that most breastfed babies don't take as much expressed milk as estimated by these methods. Current research tells us that breastmilk intake is quite constant after the first month and does not appreciably increase with age or weight, so the current findings are validating what moms and lactation counselors have observed all along."

Hi!!

Hmmm, I thought i read soething about the ounces between formula and bm on this forum :?

I think maybe it said that a baby does not require as much bm as formula because of its additional nutrients....does that make sense.  Notenoughshelfspace, I do agree with your point though!

Sabine, thank you sooo much for the website..it has a lot of great links to nursing strikes, recommended milk amounts and so on.  I can't wait to get past this nursing strike! :shock:  :shock:
