I give Zoe her toast and waffle with nothing on them  :D

Maybe cream cheese for her toast? Or hummus (would you put that on toast?  I've never had it  )

If you are looking for some toppings for waffles I've always used small amounts of PURE maple syrup for when John got older (some great minerals - calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium and zinc):

"Maple syrup and maple sugar are 100% natural sweeteners made solely from the sap of a sugar maple tree (Acer sacchrum). Nothing is ever added.  Absolutely no artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Unlike white sugar which, through its production, is stripped of its nutrients, and brown sugar, which is simply white sugar mixed with molasses, maple syrup and maple sugar are rich in potassium, calcium, and iron."

And personally, I don't think there is anything wrong with butter.  Everything in moderation  :D   I believe for underweight children it is one of the foods they recommend to help them gain weight.  I do think they make some butter with no/low sodium though.  You may want to use one of those....

I use cream cheese on John's toast.  Sometimes a little bit of spreadable fruit .

I put some really weird stuff on toast and waffles. Tyler LOVES waffles so I can use them as a way to sneak things into him. I've been known to use veggie puree, hummus, mashed tofu, or oatmeal (works wonders when he's constipated). You can also make egg yolk french toast. Now that Tyler's old enough, he loves peanut butter on his waffles and toast, so that's what he eats most days.

we have marmite and butter, cream cheese, avocado, hummos, or mashed baked beans

they are both YEAST EXTRACTS in spreadable form and are LOADED with vitamins - especially B vitamins. Vegemite is the  australian version of the British marmite (and quite a bit milder - less bite to it) If you are in the states you woudl be hard pressed to find either except in a major city with an expat community.

I've seen Vegemite at a store called World Market here in the US. They're a national chain and they stock a lot of hard to find things like that.

Since DD no longer will eat pureed foods, I use what's left of her baby food as toppings: Pureed pears, peaches, bannanas, applesauce etc. She loves it and it makes the toast soggy!

We also do cheese spread, cream cheese, avocado, banana.  The paeds here tell me it is important that I DO put butter on toast/bread, don't know about that but that is what they say here!  Deb: never had Vegemite but isn't Marmite too salty for them?
