bub luvs solids - hates milk. how to get more milk in??
« on: December 07, 2005, 11:57:06 am »
hi
My bub just turned 6 months and has been on solids since 4 months.  took to them like a duck to water (i always had trouble feeding him milk, breast feeding, then bottle fed to try to measure what he was getting).

Jackson will have a 'dream feed' at 10.00pm.
He'll take a full 220ml (7 ounces ???) at that time.

at 6.30am he has his first milk feed.  Usually only takes about
160ml (5 ounces roughly ??).  You would think he'd be starving at this time but he eats best when he is asleep at night.  I always give milk before solids.

he eats heaps of solids and never actually closes his mouth to resist more.  If i keep spooning he keeps taking.  easily has 5 ice cubes at lunch and dinner.  should I keep spooning until he stops?

i'm planning to drop dream feed again shortly (had dropped but had to start up again cause he kept waking).  if i drop the dream feed is
4 bottles of around 160ml (total daily of 640ml (about 20 ounces?) enough.

yes he is bigger than average and also taller than average.  must be a throwback in the gene pool.

also as an aside, does anyone know why asian babies always seem to be so mild mannered and well behaved?  is it upbringing or genes?

thanks
Nic

Our ped said 24-32oz until 1yr old.  But you can sneak some extra in by mixing his cereal with EBM or formula.

My dd always lets us know when she's had enough, so I'm not sure about the other question.  However, you might try limiting solids some to see if he would take more milk.

My dd hates milk. She was having 10 oz a day so I went to doc and make thousands of studies and she is ok. I switch to the 6+ formula and she is begining to like milk again, but I started with yogurt and yogurt jell-o and swiss cheese to put up calcium. She is doing ok now but having 20 to 22 oz a day of milk back again... now she hates veggies and chicken... ohh things get so complicated sometimes but if they are growing up then let them be happy. I did jello with her formula and she loved it too. good luck.

Like Deborah said, 24-32 oz is generally what's recommended until closer to 1 yr of age. If your DS isn't showing you any "full" signs, he may not really know how to yet, or he may not recognize what "full" feels like with solids (I've read that it feels different than being full after a liquid feed). I wouldn't recommend feeding him solids until he's full unless he's taking more formula. It's hard to strike a balance between solids and liquids, and I remember always having to cut back and increase until we got it right (then, of course, it would change again  ). Since he's still pretty young, I'd recommend cutting back on solids to try and get his formula intake up again, then go from there. HTH!

In the UK we go by a minimum of 20 ounces of milk from the age of 6 months inclusive of milk on cereal, in foods, in cooking, etc. It also includes dairy products e.g. yoghurt, cheese, etc.

You might also find that dropping the dream feed will make your lo increase the amounts he takes in his daytime bottles so it may end up more than 20 ounces anyway.

I think you are doing just fine - some babies like milk a lot and some (like my own!) can take it or leave it. As long as your lo has other calcium sources they will get the nutrition they need.

thanks everyone for the tips.  hey the jello with the formula is a pretty neat idea.
i figure he's just meeting the bare minimum, so maybe a bit more cereal and less veges at dinner time might help add a bit.  i had been concentrating on veges for lunch and dinner but i suppose you can have cereal at night too!

thanks again.
