8 Month old only wants purees.
« on: December 10, 2005, 10:39:15 am »
Can anyone advise me?

My son is 8 months and never been the easiest child to feed. He's on 3 meals a day plus a snack before bedtime but he will only eat purees. I've tried small lumps (pasta, grated cheese) but each time he's gagged and choked and, the lastest time, thrown up.
He also doesnt show any interest in finger food either. Everything we've tried, he just throws on the floor.

Any ideas? My HV isnt very helpful. Her suggestions are French bread or slices of apple but, if he wont self feed and he chokes on pasta, I cant see how he would manage either of those.

I have a friend whose lo now 14mo only just mastered mashed food at her first birthday & didn't have much interest in finger food until then... seeing her tonight she ate very lumpy food & finger food & did the transition from pure to "chewing" in about 3 weeks.
I'd just keep offering & trying & not worry as long as food is getting eaten... some babies have more problems than others I think.

My eight months old has just now started tolerating a little bit of texture. But only some; pasta is fine now because it is slimy and just slides down the throat, it took ages for her to take that though. This week we have just started on Cheerios; I used to soak them in water to make them mushy, that lasted 3 weeks but now she can take it normally.
Still no interest in self-feeding at all.
This is what I know. My ped. said that Gigi has a very small throat so it will take her a while to be able to eat textured food. ( SMothing worth looking into?) and the best way to introduce texture is through finger food and only gradually thickening her purees rather than adding 'bits' into her food. Pasta is the best thing in food, as I said it is the slime thing ( thus is is good for finger food as well).
She still can't handle soft fruit, veg or anything like that. I will go very, very slowly.
Total sympathy on the gagging and vomiting, my highchair ............ (gross).

My dd only started eating cheerios and toast at about 10 months and would only eat puree for all other meals. the only finger foods she still does are rice cakes, bread sticks, toast and the odd time corn. You just have to keep offering, in the last 2 weeks I have managed to get small bits of meatballs with pasta and homemade chicken burgers into her and occasionally she will pick them up herself, she will eat dry cornflakes too. I really think she has a problem with texture and anything that is not dry she usually wont touch.
Just keep offering and trying,

I suppose the only advise I can offer is to continue to offer but dont be anxious about it. Maybe put some textured foods on a plate on the high chair while you feed puree and after a while your Lo might start to experiment. If you try and force it on them then you get upset which makes them upset and doesnt help the situation at all.
Just make sure that your lo is getting enough variety of flavours in the purees. It will come with time.
