6 mo old Won't take solids
« on: December 19, 2005, 02:11:46 am »
Please help :?
My 6 mo old will not take solids and I have been trying for the last 3 weeks.  He is big...20lbs.  Currently BF in the morning and fed EBM the rest of the day.  Here is his schedule.

5am BF then back to sleep
7am wake and BF top up
8am try cereal
9am nap (1.5-2hrs)
11am EBM ~4-6 oz
12 pm try veg--sweet potato
1pm nap (1.5-2hrs)
3pm EBM~6oz
430pm nap ~1hr
5/530pm EBM ~4oz
630pm cereal try
730pm EBM ~4-5 oz
11pm DF 6-8 oz

I figure he takes b/w 30-32 oz of EBM per day.  I have tried rice for 3/52 and he hated it.  Tried different consistencies, different warmths of EBM, formula to mix and tried mixing with fruit...hated it.  Closed his mouth shut.

THen one day bought oatmeal and he took it   .  Now he won't take it and even if I wait longer than 1hr after EBM he still will maybe take one or two small spoonfuls.  He is cutting his first tooth lower gum which I noticed two days ago.

Should I be feeding him solids first?? If so I am worried he will refuse his bottle and I still want him to get as much EBM as possible??  Should I be waiting longer after his bottle to give solids??  Any suggestions would be helpful..

THanks,

Sabine

We started solids with Tyler at 6 mo, and it took several weeks before he got even remotely interested. He'd eat maybe 1 tsp at each meal and wouldn't open his mouth. We kept trying a new food every few days, and finally one day, he opened his mouth and got interested (it was peas, of all things!). Sometimes it just takes some babies longer than others. I wouldn't try switching things around, since breastmilk should still be his main source of nutrition and he has plenty of time to get the hang of solids. Try your best to be patient and have fun with it, and he'll come around when he's ready!

could it be teething that has your lo's appetite?  i know that my lo (who LOVED her solids) decided to slam her lips together anytime she saw a spoon coming for a little over a week..and temporarily decreased her breastmilk intake...just a thought

hi sabine!
Your lo is a big boy and he is eating a lot of ebm not to mention also the bf.  When Jackson was 6 months my ped suggested switching solids and milk feeds around because he was a good size (16 lbs)  He also hated rice cereal, he would just let it drool out of his mouth.    But once i switched solids first and to oatmeal he started gobbling it down and he still took good milk feeds. our day was something like this:
7am cereal 3 (dry) Tbsp mixed with ebm and 1-2oz of fruit followed by
       a 6 oz bottle
11am veggies/fruit 3-4 oz followed by a 4-6 oz bottle
3pm 8oz bottle
6pm veggies/fruit/meat 4-6 oz followed by 8 oz bottle

Then repeat.  I hope that helps!

I would also suggest the same thing, as far as switching the milk feeds with the solid feedings.  Try this for 1-2 days, and see how it goes.  Then if he isn't eating his milk as well, you can always switch back.  It does sound like he is too full to be interested in eating solids.  Or DS may just be hesitant to try new things and need more time and less pressure to do it.  Keep trying different foods every few days and maybe just try to feed him once a day, say lunchtime.  You have to work up to three meals a day, and his appetite and interest will dictate when that will be.  Also, you can sit him in his high chair when you are having your meals to get him interested.  Let him play with a sippy cup and spoon while he is watching you eat.  My DD loves to watch people eat.  This started way before she ever ate solids.  He will get the hang of it eventually as all babies do.  Good luck!

I would give a little solids before each breastfeed.  That way he'll be hungry enough to try it.  Just give a couple really liquidy teaspoons.  It took my dd about a month before she actually swallowed properly...at first it would mostly just dribble down her chin.  Then once she liked solids I went back to bottle than solids an hour later.

My ds didn't really take to solids till around 10 mos.  He basically skipped the whole baby-food-being-spoon-fed stage and went right to feeding himself.  Weight wasn't an issue so I just followed his lead.

I think as long as he is happy on bm then don't worry to much about the solids... my ds is 23lb & 7mo & only takes about 2oz of solids, but is sleeping well & I know (from my first) that he will be fine & eating good amounts of solids, when he is ready.

Thanks for your helpful tips.  I looked in his mouth and one tooth is through the lower gum and he is cutting another right beside

After the first tooth cut, he took 1.5 tblsp oatmeal 2x per day :D  :D
Now the other tooth is cutting he isn't interested again...I think it may be his teeth.

But I will keep trying!!

Thanks.
