low milk supply at 8 weeks
« on: December 25, 2005, 02:31:39 am »
MY 8 week old has been fussing after finishing feeding and seems to be unable to get anymore from me.  When I offered her a bottle tonight she took 1.5 ounces after eating.  She also is stretching out the amount of time she is sleeping.  How can I increase my milk supply for her 6 feeds per day?

Sounds like she is having a growth spurt...I would be offering as often & for as long as she wants to build up your supply...bf works on supply & demand & growth spurts happen often around 3 & 6 weeks & then again at 3 months...if you go by the "textbook' for my ds they happened at 10days, 4.5 weeks & 10 weeks, then 4 months. So this could be when your lo is having hers.

If she refuses to feed more often, you may need to pump after a feed or two to stimulate your body to make more milk. Some babies with light sucking patterns don't "demand" enough milk production.

6 feeds per day may not be enough for an 8 week old.

Last night my 6 week old took 3oz of formula only 1/2 hour after BF, I was horrified that maybe I've run dry?!
I think my supply is low in the evenings vs. the morning and day when she feeds longer and heavier. How do I get my evening supply up? I know if you let them suck more this will increase but does just sucking work if they're not drinking much? My little one currently eats 9x total in 24 hours usually only BF but I got desperate last night.
