moving from 3hr to 4hr
« on: December 31, 2005, 04:54:36 am »
My son is 14 weeks and we've been on EASY for two weeks... he takes super short naps (1/2hr) and we're working on extending them this week... should I also start moving him to 4hr EASY while I'm in the process?? I can't tell if he's ready... he is able to stay awake for long periods (before we were on EASY he was skipping naps (EAEAS))...

Hi!  :D

Here are some signs of needing to transition:
1. Not taking as much at a feed (baby not as hungry at 3 hours)
2. Erratic Night Wakings
3. They are extending their awake times
4. Starts taking 45 minute naps

Also...if you could post your current routine/schedule it might give us some better insight.

Is he waking happy?  If so, he might be happy with power naps.  I found it impossible to extend naps when waking happy  :D

E 5ish
straight back to sleep
E 8am
A 8:30
S 9:30 wakes in the middle so we spend a while falling back asleep
E 11:15 (happy then)
A 11:45
S 12:30
E 2:15
A 2:45
S 3:45
E 5
A
E 7
S 7:30
DF 11

looking at this I see that I keep the nap times consistent and usually change the time when he eats... and the naps are all the same... he wakes in the middle and then we spend a good 20 minutes getting back to sleep and then he's happy when he wakes up... it usually takes him about 15 minutes to fall asleep... at bedtime I spend a couple of minutes with him and he falls asleep on his own for "the night"... we have a good nap and sleep routine...

Looks like you have a good schedule  :D

I would go ahead and try moving to a 4 hour routine, you may see some improvements in his naps (you may have to go by his cues)  You may also see that some days you are feeding at 3.5 some days 3.25, etc.  and may need to feed before a nap - but that's OK if he isn't using bottle/breast to fall asleep  :D

That's great!!! I actually moved to the 4 hr all at once with both of mine too with no problems (though we still needed to tweak every now again when we had an out of sync day  )

Let me know if it has any impact on the length of naps...
