Issue came up last night....
« on: December 31, 2005, 14:21:46 pm »
For the first time we actually went through the whole day on EASY. Last night she went down at 8 pm after her bath for bed (was fed at 7). Should I be waking her for her 10pm feed or letting her wake naturally? Or dream feeding it? If df, how do you do this?

I'm no pro (my lo is 6.5 weeks and we have lots of sleep/feed/burb issues) but here's my experience-

I asked my doctor and at a local BF clinic and both told me not to wake for feeds at night if she is sleeping (at 5 weeks or older) but both advised me that I could do a dream feed if I wanted. Day is different- don't let them sleep through a feed time. So, info I received was same as advice in the book.

I personally tried a dream feed 2 nights ago- she fed at 10pm and then fell asleep shortly after (usually will then sleep until 4 or 5am) so I BF here at 12am and she peacefully slept through the feed. Unfortunately she then needed a diaper change and woke in the middle of it. Crying and screaming from 12:30am until 1:30am and nothing would calm her more than 5 minutes at a time. So, for my fiesty spirited one that hates to be bothered in her dream sleep- no more dream feeds as she was doing fine without them. You could try it and see what results you get.

Sorry, I forgot to mention the "how"-
Just pick them up gently in their sleep and if BF bring her lips to your breast and sort of tickle her lips- she'll open her mouth and nurse in her sleep. I would make sure to keep them on a slight angle so that the head is not lower than the body. Same if using the bottle. Also, you don't need to burp if BF in sleep as they are not gulping air from the feed (if they have a good latch) or from crying.

FTM: How do you get them to take a full feeding while they sleep? Last night during her df it seemed like she just had a snack, because she woke up again at 1:45 to eat. (bfing).

If you fed her at 10pm this could have been her natural hunger time to feed again. Is she sleeping through the night yet? Or is there a time in the day that she has a longer sleep? My lo for the first 4 weeks woke through the night to feed but then had a 5 hour sleep from 8am. I then started to wake her during this 5 hour sleep and did not let her sleep more than 3 during the day and she then made the switch to sleep 5 hours solid at night (though I need to get her to start her 5 hour sleep prior to midnight!  ). How long did she feed during the DF? If you think she was just snacking (as mine does when she is sleepy in the day during some feeds) I keep her on longer (1/2 hour) and stroke her ear and back of her head as I find this does not wake her but gets her to start sucking again. During the DF I tried my lo latched immediately but then did nothing for a few minutes, once she did start sucking she sucked well for 15 minutes. Word of warning- she will growth spurt it at about 6 weeks! Feed all day and night!

Can't wait! We just finished one!

She fed at 11, not 10...so yeah it could have just been time to eat!
