tummy sleeping...what to do?????
« on: January 06, 2006, 00:48:43 am »
Okay...so I need some help here.  Cait was diagnosed at the ER earlier this week with RSV.  Since then she has been slowly getting better, but Tuesday we elevated her crib mattress and against my morbid fears, I put her down to sleep on her tummy.

I am so terrified of sids, that the first two months of her life I was almost fanatical about it.  Cait will be 7 months next Tuesday.  Since she has been sick, sleeping  on her tummy has been the only way she will sleep in her crib.  Mainly because she goes to sleep upright on my chest so that she can breathe.

I think some of my ppl think I am being WAY to paranoid.  She is a healthy baby, doesn't roll yet, othewise a good baby.

What do you think?

We have also just begun to put our 7 month old to sleep on his stomach.  I am just as scared of SIDS as you are!!  However, it is the only way that he will sleep(sick or not!).  Everything that I have read said that they should be safe on their tummy if they can roll over.  I might reconcider until she can roll.  They say this due to the suffication hazards.  Good luck getting some sleep!

BJ-
I know that SIDS risk goes down after six months, though it doesn't totally go away until a year.  You can also look at the other risk factors - is her room too warm?  Too many clothes?  DD had RSV a few months ago and it sucked - watch for ear infections next, my ped said they often get them due to all the fluid from RSV

Erin-we are already on the pink stuff train!!!  Ear infection was diagnosed 2 days after the initial dr visit.  She hasn't been doing bad on her tummy, but like right now, I just went in there because she is mad about being in bed and she rolled from her tummy to her back and that ed her off even more.  I guess I should have clarified that she is not a back to tummy roller.

This is the part of babyhood I would like to skip.

I assume she's on a nice flat crib sheet and mattress?  No fluff around her?  And you verified she can roll tummy to back, so she'll be fine.  Many babies (including mine) decide to sleep on their tummies once they can roll.  And there's not a darn thing you can do about that!
