why wont my ds use his own hands when feeding?
« on: February 01, 2006, 14:20:35 pm »
my son, 10 months, wont put anything in his mouth (including toys - never has done). He wont hold his own bottle either. He CAN hold  it - he plays with it after a feed - but he WONT hold it while it's in his mouth, and certainly wont try to put it in his mouth.

I've tried finger foods many times, but he just looks at it, and waits till I put it in his mouth. If I leave him to try it himself, he screeches and has a bit of a tantrum, but still wont attempt to pick it up himself. I've tried sitting in front of him, and showing him what to do and making "yummy" noises. But he either just laughs or gets annoyed at me!

Interestingly, if I spoon some solids into his mouth, he'll try to push in any food that is left hanging out of his mouth.
Also, he has a tantrum if i try to put a sippy cup near his mouth too.

Please Help!

Sounds like he knows what to do, but just isn't ready to do it yet for whatever reason. You're doing the right thing. If he doesn't want to pick up his food himself yet, that's okay. He's still learning when you pick it up and feed it to him. Put the finger food on his tray so he can pick it up if he wants, and use what's on the tray when you pick up a piece to feed him. He'll figure it out. Keep the sippy available, let him take the lead and do what he wants with it. He probably just wants to figure things out on his own timetable, and he'll come around before you know it!
