How long should nighttime sleep be
« on: February 10, 2006, 14:25:26 pm »
Hello,

My daughter is 4 months old and I am just starting EASY.  I am a little confused on the amount of sleep she should be getting at 4 months.  She went to bed at 7 pm and woke up at 4:15am.  That is just about 10 hours.  Isn't that what she should be getting.  Because yesterday the same thing happen and I tried to hold her off from eating until 6 am and she was miserable.  So today when I went in her room at 4:15am she was all smiles and I decided not to hold her off.  I came downstairs and fed her 6oz and she went back down at 5am and woke up at 8am.  Is this O.K. or will it become a habit her waking up at 4am?  Thank You.  I would be lost if I didn't have these boards and I appriciate everyone taking the time to reply.  Thanks Again

My lo is almost 3 months and sleeps from around 8pm to 8am with 2 night time feeds so I would think that 1 night time feed sounds right for a 4 month old. I'm not sure at what age before they go the entire night without a feed but I think it totally varies by baby and I would think it would be later on (when they are eating solids). It sounds as though your lo woke up from hunger since she took a good feed.

Gage still wakes between 4-6am. When he wakes I treat it as a night feed, and put him back to bed. Sometimes he falls right back to sleep and other times he farts around. He then wakes at 8am. I dont want him to think 4am is the time to start the day. ;)

2 things can be going on

1) if she wakes in the nightat 4 mo it is LIKELY hunger so if she takes a full feed that is your answer - just feed in the dark, no eye contact and straight back to bed (don't try to hold her off to 6 am as sheis still young and that stretch to 4am is awesome.)

or 2) at 4 mo a lot of babies go through a developmental stage of waking up at approx. 4 am (don't ask me why this time but it is THE MOST common time) and just talk to themselves or play etc for anywhere up to 2 hrs. i went through this with dd2 not dd1 and we just had to ride it out for almost 2 weeks. 1st 2 nights i tried to feed her but she barely ate so i learned it was not hunger. just had to turn the monitor down and get some sleep. it eventually stopped. if she does not CRY for you don't go in. just b/c you hear her awake does not mean you need to go in. so if you justhear her "up" wait and see. if she cries for you and you offer food - see if she takes a full feed or not.
